Pulling the trigger sent a puff of acetylene gas into the firing chamber. This pushed a small ball of magnesium so it bridged two electrodes.
The spark ignited the acetylene. This ignited the magnesium and propelled it out the barrel. The burning acetylene exited the chamber through four vents, creating the X shaped blue flare.
