CLASSIC MARATHON IS NOW ON STEAM!

AND IT’S COMPLETELY FREE!!!

IT HAS MODERN MAC SUPPORT TOO!!!!!

If you don’t know what Marathon is, it’s one of the greatest FPS games of all time – made by Bungie, the same studio who brought us Halo!

@atomicpoet Have you looked at Aleph One or any of the fan-man games? Super excited for Steam ofc. If you liked Marathon there are also some amazing editions to the universe.

aWildThorp,
@aWildThorp@triangletoot.party avatar

@atomicpoet Yeah Aleph One is great. I almost did some work on it a few years back but my C++ was not up to snuff to get much done. Its support for Lua scripting enables some insane stuff as well in fan-made games on the engine

@atomicpoet Rubicon and Apotheosis X are two "mods" that stand out in terms of quality. The latter especially has some unparalleled level design, engine exploiting innovation (smoke effects, walls exploding, etc), and fantastic writing.

Today Watt-Wise Game Jam begins! The theme is "Breaking and Re-Making". The jam aims to examine what games may look like when power consumption is minimal, with power usage being one of the scoring categories. We've also got some tools to help with that. Check us out at https://wattwise.games or on https://itch.io/jam/watt-wise-game-jam!

Telegram leaks your IP address to anyone in your contacts during a call. And a researcher has created a tool to easily exploit this.

says this is expected behavior, so there's nothing to fix or change.

That's why our top WhatsApp alternatives are and : https://tuta.com/blog/best-whatsapp-alternatives-privacy

More on this story: https://techcrunch.com/2023/10/19/telegram-is-still-leaking-user-ip-addresses-to-contacts/

@Tutanota This is kind of clickbait. A less manipulative headline would qualify that it leaks the IP to the recipient of the call and that this is due to the VoIP protocol being peer to peer.

I won't argue that Signal is a more secure app, but Peer to Peer calling is not a security vulnerability. Many security focused people would consider peer to peer VoIP desirable. Especially since the alternative is the calls going through Telegram's servers

Considering handlebar covers/mittens for doing updates in cold weather. They're quite pricey though. Would they help?

It's fairly slow travel, with frequent stops near the footway=sidewalk to record data on the phone. Are they any good for that sort of thing, if I use them with a pair of insulated fingerless gloves underneath? @bikes @mastobikes @cycling

@achadwick @bikes @mastobikes @cycling

I use a pair of Wobs for biking around in the cold and at ~32(f) I don't even need a pair of gloves on underneath. They're amazing.

A friend and I are looking into the feasibility of a low-power game jam, where the judging criteria would be weighted on the energy used during the game. We're excited to see what that looks like, beyond/including low-res, retro pixelart, ditherpunk, etc. :)

We haven't hosted game jams, and as far as we can tell there hasn't been anything similar? Does anyone have experience measuring game energy-use or running a jam? Any pointers would be appreciated 😃

It's happening! We have a website: https://wattwise.games, and a discord which is bridged with an IRC thanks to @amolith :)

The plan is to run for 30 days from March 22nd to April 22nd (Earth Day).

After all the various employee harassment trainings I've had, I'm still not sure if Kentuckian jokes are legal or not.

aWildThorp,
@aWildThorp@triangletoot.party avatar

@vwbusguy I haven't been a victim of this harassment at work, though I have coworkers from Appalachia who actively avoid using the word "y'all" at work for fear of the general association with the North American south

what git jargon do you find confusing? thinking of writing a blog post that explains some of git's weirder terminology: "detached HEAD state”, "fast-forward", "index/staging area/staged", “ahead of 'origin/main' by 1 commit”, etc

(really only looking for terms that you personally find confusing, not terms that you think someone else might be confused about)

aWildThorp,
@aWildThorp@triangletoot.party avatar

@b0rk that push and pull aren't exactly opposites. Also (not git but GitHub) "Pull" Request is not super intuitive, since one may think they're trying to "push" their code upstream

A "stable" release

aWildThorp,
@aWildThorp@triangletoot.party avatar

@drewdevault Never even thought there were different understandings of the term, but it explains some debates I've had in the past 😅

I've always taken "stable" to be somewhat synonymous with "major version"

@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

The thing about coding with is that it feels like I'm getting paid to do Sudoku puzzles for a living.

Tip for those who are asked to review code with regex: Rather than focusing on the regex itself, ask to see the automated tests that it is ran against and look for gaps in the tests rather than getting lost in the weeds with scrutinizing the regex itself unless there's an obvious significant performance problem.

aWildThorp,
@aWildThorp@triangletoot.party avatar

@vwbusguy This site is especially awesome because you can link to your test input, so if you write some terrifying regex you can link to the examples in the PR, or if you see an edge case you can link to the edge case alongside all the working cases

Anyone on here setup notifications for Slack, Telegram, iMessage, and/or Signal to go through Zapier (or a similar API connecting service)?

I'm considering switching to a phone without those apps, but with the right configuration I would really like to at least still get notifications from them.

Cyclists with road bikes, how do you manage neck pain on rides? I normally ride an upright bike but when I take my road bike out my neck is killing me within the first few miles.

So why do I intend to install Pop!_OS on my tower instead of something based on SteamOS?

Because I know for a fact that Pop!_OS supports Nvidia GPUs out of the box. It’s seamless.

But also, have you seen the desktop UI for Pop!_OS? It’s miles better than on other Linux distros. Hell, it’s better than Windows too.

If I discontinue PC Game Pass, that’s where I’m going. I mean, just look at this screenshot of Pop!_OS.

The American system is so weird. On the face of it, it looks like insurance paid out over $90k, but over $86k of that was just the insurance company telling our providers "nah, we're not paying that".

aWildThorp,
@aWildThorp@triangletoot.party avatar

@thefossguy @vwbusguy Some people do do that, but one thing to consider is that because of how the system is designed, you wouldn't be on the hook for the ~$6k paid to the hospital, you'd be on the hook for the full 96k
