I love a good interview, and the questions being fired off here are excellent. Seeing how much Sundar squirms at each question means to me that Nilay is doing the right thing here.

Nuclear Throne is an incredible game, just as I'd heard. I'm glad I jumped on it finally. Figuring out the different random power-up mutations, the runs are fun as hell, twin stick shooting, permadeath, it's a blast. It's tough! But I'm gonna keep trying to get to that throne 🔫

@mdkcore

An early level of Nuclear Throne. Desert type terrain, the main character shooting at some enemies
Another level of Nuclear Throne, darker green color, character is shooting a green laser. The weapons are awesome.
Artistic rendition of the characters sitting around the fire. Super cute monsters.

@jake4480 @mdkcore haven’t checked out Toadomination, but I will now!

NT shines post throne. I won’t spoil it though.

The design philosophy of every gun needs to feel kickass, even the starter pistol is just so dang good.

What are you currently using for organising the next tasks you want to do for your apps?

I tried many, not super with any of them.

I need just multiple task lists, so that I can group my tasks by topic, and then a Kanban board to plan them out.

Currently doing this with Apple Reminders, with "Working" List that has multiple Columns (my Kanban board) and Smart lists based on tags (my grouped task lists.

And that is working quite well. But would be interested what you are using!

Soulver is one of those apps that’s so good it should be part of the OS. Weird how no one seems to have copied it. It’d be a perfect fit for something like Notion. https://soulver.app

@jonikorpi huh I’ve never heard of Soulver, but I’ve been using Numi for years…

This week's blog post is a bit of a lore dump, but also a reflection on what "story" and “narrative" can mean within games, and why I tend to prefer building systemic games over narrative ones.

Also: enjoy a big robot smashy shooty gif.

https://www.anchoritegames.com/posts/05-04-24_balancing-act.html

An Exo (big robot) charges behind a gigantic log pile amid a desolate landscape, hides for a second then pops out, opening up it’s quad vulcan cannons on an unsuspecting Commonwealth tank and mech column before darting back into cover.

Does anyone have any insight into why all the game dev layoffs are happening?
Like maybe loans are harder to get in general to fund companies. Or perhaps folks who would invest in games are investing in AI instead?

anchorite,
@anchorite@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@demofox it’s interest rates. As a creative high risk industry, any company not making enough of a return has to tighten their belts. Many companies had a long time of low interest rates meaning lots of borrowing power, now that’s all drying up.

Bullshit but it’s the mechanics behind the layoffs (very broadly speaking)

It's been a minute since I've posted!

Anywho, here's another blog post for Exoloper, this weeks (fun) focus has been working on the Campaign Intro Drop Sequence.

This kinda stuff is just pure crack for my brain, if I could spend all my gamedev time working on this kinda thing that'd be just tops.

https://www.anchoritegames.com/posts/01-03-24_drop-sequence.html

A gif of Exoloper from inside the mech’s cockpit, a large button on screen says “DROP”. Pressing the button begins an animation where the players hands lock a lever into place, then they warp down to the planets surface in a firey torrent.

This week I spent my time on the games HUD. Trying to make it look distinct, interesting, and letting it convey necessary info, whilst making it respond to not only screen sizes, but orientations and controller layouts has been... challenging…

Back on my modelling bullshit today: this time, robots!

Here's the current blockout (with weapons from Interloper) and the concept I'm working from.

a concept sketch showing of a large bipedal robot. It uses a strong design language of boxy static components mixed with cylindrical moving parts.

Weirdly the only big tech AI thing I find mildly interesting is Apple's on device solution.

I am very much not a fan of Apple but they seem to be approaching things in a way that's both mostly respectful of end users and likely to be sustainable from a business POV. Tying AI features to hardware means that Apple can use it to sell more hardware that's already profitable. Unlike Amazon, MS et al who spent on massive infrastructure, in addition to the R&D cost, and monetizing after the fact

anchorite,
@anchorite@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@beeoproblem I think you nailed it here with it being “mostly respectful of end users”

Absolutely none of the server driven, web scraping ai that’s popular right now is remotely respectful to either the end users nor the “content providers”

I also love that the first “transform model” Apple used is literally just a better autocorrect, feels like a subtweet in software form.

Today I was amused because some rando started arguing with me on one of my posts? About some unimportant bullshit? Never talked to this person before, we never followed each other, but they sure wanted to be right, and to waste my time, apparently. I don't block many folks, but.. today I made an exception 😂

I mean, I try to be decent and nice to people. I just wish people thought about what they were putting out there, the general tone of it, even, before going and making dumbass troll comments to people they don't even know.

anchorite,

@jake4480 I insta-block, insta-unfollow and whatever esle if something on my timeline isn't to my tatse, let alone if it's offensive or annoying. I don't have time for shit.

Some people can't help themselves, others truly have no empathy or ability to sense that what they're saying might be offensive.

It's a tradeoff for being able to communicate with anyone worldwide, assholes exist unfortunately.

I think I’m going to try something wild and submit App Store screenshots as just... screenshots. No device frame, no promotional text. Most of Apple's apps and apps few indie apps like Ivory use the format. It was the original intent of App Store screenshots. Plus... people don't find Facades organically. I'm careful with my keywords to satisfy app review. They follow a link or are referred from a friend. I don't really need to market it in the app description.

Just another day working on Unity UI wishing I had HTML + CSS. Arguably I've spent way longer using Unity's UI tools than web tools, but holy shit is it convoluted by comparison?

Having to navigate creating nested sets of prefabs to just have a standard style is insane.
