Idea: set up a volunteers and donation-run server hosting platform, where you can apply for a free VM or container if you do not have much money to play with these things. Applying & verification would involve a short conversation with someone to get an idea of the situation and the needs, and off it goes. Running a platform like that wouldn't be very different from running a mastodon server in terms of moderation, you'd need to find a bunch of folk that'd help but it could be mostly automated 🤔

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@basisbit yea you'd think, but think about it, they'd have to make up a ton of fake stories only to get a single mediocre compute unit for each of those, it'd be very hard to exploit at scale, free tier VMs at big clouds would be far easier a target that you could automate, the fact you have to speak with a human is a huge filter, and the personal interaction also means you can help people much more effectively

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@basisbit that sounds like a ToS issue :P but yea it does come with a bunch of work

#JoostKlein should make more songs, ironically his unfair disqualification from the songfestival probably made him the most known contestant, he could easily make use of that while he's still in the spotlights :blobcatthinkingsmirk:

sirlan, to random

so, is there a way to sign up for tailscale without having to sign in with google/microsoft/github/apple?

I know there is the oidc option, but then every oidc provider I've looked at seems to also only allow you to sign up with google/microsoft/github/apple

something something, oauth/oidc for an "open" protocol thing sure as hell only serves to make you rely on corporations

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@sirlan oidc/oauth is just an open protocol; big corporations implement it too because they want to be relevant, but that doesn't mean every oauth provider is in the pocket of big corporations, it just means they're compatible. You can also set up your own, often things that have their own login system also allow you to use that as oauth provider. A good example of this is Nextcloud https://docs.nextcloud.com/server/latest/admin_manual/configuration_server/oauth2.html

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@sirlan it is definitely annoying to set up properly, tho stuff like nextcloud already does most of that work for you and you just need to integrate it further.. I keep thinking about doing it myself but then I realize I should probably set up a proper SAML/SSO (Single Sign On) for my everything so I can have proper centralized auth for all my services to begin with, and then that quickly devolves further into wanting to build my whole own infra from scratch and, well let's just say it's a todo😅

Little secret about datacenter water usage: they actually don't USE nearly as much as they report-- they DRAW a lot of water yes, but they'll only cycle it a few times before giving it back, either through waste pipes or other ways, otherwise you get sediment buildup in the pipes and heatexchangers. The average golf course uses far more water, and actually uses it without returning any of it

And the alternative, is to use energy-heavy AC/heatpumps, which due to public outcry, is happening more.

ordered a second hand 800w car alternator for 20€, want to try hook it up to my old exercise bike and see what I can get out of it, maybe charge some 12v batteries with it if it works

now to just get a v-belt and some mounting and tensioning gear, I already have a battery and charge controller that should do the trick, it'd be amazing if I could make this whole thing work for less than 50

This is an industrial designed exercise bike from Lithuania that can store 2KWh of electricity generated by your own exercise.

The electricity can then be used for loads of stuff - it has a bunch of DC outputs, like USB-C (up to 60W) and USB-A, and AC outputs (can output up to 2KW - enough for an oven!)

It can also be fed from a solar panel, or the mains.

It’s about 3K EUR, so not much more than a high end Peloton , but obvs serving a very different market…

@mrchrisadams so this kinda stuff is the reason 'bookmarks' in mastodon were invented, I absolutely neeeed this! :drgn_sparkle: imagine combining it with a panel and being completely selfsufficient out in the wild, and also just being able to actually work for your cake as a workout and all that, but for that I first have to save up the price of a decent second hand car :laughcry: maybe I'll try build something similar with the old exercise bike I have and a car alternator :dragn_thinkflare:

Went to the windmill nearby because they had an open day, got an amazing tour while they were closing up everything, very happy I went to check it out

Walking around a windmill, starting at the top, pointing at parts of the machinery, then going down. Some Dutch words are exchanged with the maintainer of the windmill

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@feliks kinda! I heard dutch sounds a bit like drunk/slurred german, the other way around it kinda sounds like maybe you got your mouth full or you're adding extra noises to the words I suppose? Plus some words being completely different like fahrrad vs fiets

What the server is running on btw

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@aniki I remember that mobo! people often also bought that specific copper CPU cooler with it, it was an interesting board because it could handle both DDR2 AND DDR3 by virtue of a special module you plugged into either the ddr2 or 3 slot, allowing you to use the other slots. Not sure if it's MSI or Gigabyte, it's been quite a while, but one of those two for sure
