Monk Parakeets occasionally escape from captivity and eventually start breeding activity when biology so instructs. In some places, escaped Monk Parakeets have found other escaped Monk Parakeets and have established stable local populations.

One such escapee has built a nest nearby (eastern NC), and it's been fun to watch it fly around and call and diligently work on its nest. Only one bird is present so all this work is certainly for naught.

A utility pole dominates the left half of the image. A gray cylindrical power transformer is attached to the pole. Various cables and wires enter the picture from different angles and meet near the transformer. Below the transformer is a large assemblage of sticks and branches that have been woven into a large nest. The nest has an entrance on its right side. A short distance from the entrance, a Monk Parakeet perches on a wire. The parakeet is carrying a long twig in its bill. The twig hangs down for quite a distance. The background of the image shows out-of-focus pine trees and a hazy sky.

The only acceptable use of an @-channel on slack is to inform everyone that there's an emergency and that the building must be evacuated. That's it.

Bought a TC-14EII 1.4x teleconverter for my telephoto lens, and Nikon lists the AF-S 105mm ƒ/2.8 macro lens as compatible but with "AF not possible", which made no sense since it's a very fast lens.

So I connected it to my Z6ii and… it worked fine! Fast AF too! Hmm… Maybe a recent firmware update fixed it?

So I tried on my 2006 F75 film camera and… it also worked!!

What the hell Nikon…

This thing is now half a meter long when fully deployed. Absolute unit. Truly unhinged.

@midendian ah that might be it, I suppose? Their form seems to only distinguish between cameras able to focus at ƒ/8+ or not.

@arroz I shoot this thing handheld, or at least I did without the teleconverter. We'll see now with it, but I think the VR should be able to cope

Fun fact, the first “retina screen” laptop from Apple was released 12 years ago and is basically now.

@thomasfuchs my mom still uses mine for web browsing, email, and FaceTime. Surprisingly durable machine. In my opinion one the best Macs ever made.

People who were monied adults in the 90s and 00s: did anyone ever use those credit card terminals on the back of airplane seats? Or was that a whole vaporware idea that got sold to airlines and never actually made to do anything useful?

brunoph,
@brunoph@breakpoint.cafe avatar

@axiixc oh wow, I forgot those were a thing. Now I remember the first time I travelled to the US with my mother, in 2012, I bought a prepaid phone card to call back home and tell my grandparents we arrived safely since everyone still used the phone back then, and that isn't even that long ago!

If you've been considering buying a Nikon mirrorless camera, both the Z6ii and Z7ii are deeply discounted right now, with the Z7ii being $1k off (33%) (both USD and CAD).

if you have a program that can apply color temperature, brightness, and gamma to your monitor, what do you call an individual (temperature, brightness, gamma) tuple? i've been calling them "ColorSettings" or just "Color" but that doesn't seem right

brunoph,
@brunoph@breakpoint.cafe avatar

@hierarchon "something" adjustment? Perhaps "ScreenAdjustment" or "ColorAdjustment"

@onpaperwings how interesting it is that the marketing is almost entirely focused on how simply-constructed, long lasting the printer is, and how high quality the prints are. Zero mention of yields and cost of production.

This is very contrasting to modern counterparts, where the marketing is heavily focused on yield and speed.

For example: (only picked this one as it was the first one I could find with a marketing page) https://www.heidelberg.com/us/en/products/offset_printing/sheetfed_offset_overview.jsp

I recently bought some brand new old-stock Type II cassettes to transplant into the case of pre-recorded tapes I like, and not even my Nak deck with manual bias can record decent audio to them. I'm guessing they were left in some hot warehouse for years and now are pretty much useless... bummer

I love this story. Dude is at beach taking photos of a waterfall. Sees a cute birb. Snaps some photos of it because why not? Cute birb.

Turns out it's a bird from the other side of the planet, rumoured to have been present in the PNW coast on occasion since 1997, but never verified to be.

Birders then discover his photo and now hate him with a passion.

“I guess I’m a birder at this point,” Sanchez said
