@jerry Also, a lot of those instances are (I'm guessing) a lot newer. I'd posit that as the last two large twitter migrations happened, many of the large instances open to registration had to strengthen their moderation rules, which caused a lot of these fringe groups to have to find a new home. Plus, just a few years back your choices were (in practice) limited to mastodon and pleroma, the latter of which is less resource-hungry.

americans have always loved the "scrappy can-do kids fight back against the big evil" story (see: romanticizing the evolutionary war, star wars, romanticizing the contras, ...).

maybe the modern US dysfunction can be explained by running out of big evils to cosplay scrappy fights against. so the government itself has to become the final big boss, and we can all be self-satisfied by scratching out tiny victories against an unstoppable evil force.

@robey I once read a similar analysis that Disney World is a similar thing, where people go to "larp" living in a functioning society with functional public transport, pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, and visions of a utopian "wonderful future" that will never come.

I've wanted one of these for a long time, and I finally found one on eBay for a reasonable amount. It's an Onkyo Hi-MD deck. One of the few Hi-MD decks ever made. And it fits perfectly on top of my DENON shelf CD receiver.

Okay, this is neat. FedEx left me an automated voicemail telling me that I can pay for import duties ahead of delivery. Going to their website and using the tracking code provided by the seller prompted me to pay (using PayPal) and now they can just skip the whole shenanigans with having to hold a package due to pending fees. Neat!

Mass layoffs, gutting of moderation, killing their ethics board, disinformation rampant though verified-for-money system, musk himself spreading conspiracies, musk himself pumping crypto, and now Tucker Fucking Carlson… do I need to go on?
