After observing a Darmok conversation at work, I wondered what other scifi examples there might be of odd and interesting speech patterns.

So I mashed two together:

@ramsey @kboyd it was quite the thread. Full of all kinds of different forms of communication. Memes, stories, allegories, emoji, prose (“old people talk” as I’m sure the kids would call it.)

What’s the oldest domain name that you personally own? Mine is littlehart.net, which I believe I registered sometime in 1998

cabbey,
@cabbey@phpc.social avatar

@grmpyprogrammer huh whois says I initially registered cabbey.net on 9 July 2001... but I thought I had it well before then as I remember using it for class names in java in university, which would have been late 90s. Maybe I was just squatting on the package name?

Ever since installing Jamf on my MacBook Pro, I’ve been having a bunch of weird issues with random freezes and network connectivity issues and programs taking too long to load. This weekend, I’ve had Finder crash several times, and it wouldn’t restart. The system error reporting dialog mentions “watchdogd kernel panic.”

This is several years old, but a lot of it sounds like what I’m experiencing: https://sigpipe.macromates.com/2020/macos-catalina-slow-by-design/

Anyone familiar with this?

cabbey,
@cabbey@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey there was a module on it that we disabled to solve a bunch of performance issues on developer machines. Unfortunately the guy that would know what exactly it was is off on paternity leave. I’ll poke around in my slack dm history with him to see if I can find it tomorrow, but the general gist was that it was running every file access through a scanning process of some sort.

@kboyd @alessandrolai I have a couple in a feature dev branch at work. Gotta admit they’re pretty damn nice to code with, way better than const ints. Only gripe I have so far is that I can’t put them into log messages or context or even simple echos without doing some kind of special one off weirdo function on it and calling that. One of the few places I want a $@&*^£ magic __toString() but we can’t have it. :(

cabbey,

@alessandrolai @kboyd yeah. I just think that restriction was implemented a little too tightly. :( non static or const contexts got the short end of that deal imho, but I dunno what kind of gymnastics the internals would require to allow what I want. And I worked around it with a custom instance method that I needed for other purposes anyway. 🤷

@cabbey@phpc.social avatar

@kboyd sounds like a context processor. Could also handle casting bools as ‘T’ or ‘F’ instead of ‘1’ and ‘’.

Also me: has it all ready for review by EOD on sprint day 1

Hmm.

That's an unusual level of productivity for me - especially while suffering from a multiweek pain in one arm, and a sore wrist on the other.

Maybe I should take more long weekend road trips.

    Is there an annotation I can add to a class stub that will tell that a readonly property is most certainly set in the constructor, so that PhpStorm quits complaining that “Typed property ‘foobar’ might be uninitialized?”

    cabbey,
    @cabbey@phpc.social avatar

    @ramsey if I recall correctly we solved this by making the variable not nullable at declaration. There’s also the finally hack if exceptions are why it appears that it may be unset.
