The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) issued a statement to the press on Monday, saying they “regret that some delegations at the Song Contest (ESC) in Malmö didn’t respect the spirit of the rules and the competition both onsite and during their broadcasts.” This release does not appear on the Eurovision or EBU web sites.

“Some delegations.” “Spirit of the rules.” Suuuuuure.

@callme_jc@mastodon.scot avatar

The statement continues: “the EBU’s governing bodies will, together with the heads of delegations, review the events surrounding the ESC in Malmö to move forward in a positive way and to ensure the values of the event are respected by everyone.

“Individual cases will be discussed by the event’s governing body, the Song Contest Reference Group made up of representatives from participating broadcasters, at its next meeting.”

Place your bets as to whether KAN faces ANY consequences.

Separately, Malmö Police said on Monday that The Netherlands’ , disqualified from on Saturday, will likely be charged for making illegal threats. Aftonbladet, citing an unnamed source, claims Klein raised his arm with a fist and lunged at a female photographer who repeatedly refused to stop filming Klein, stopping short at making contact.

The EBU today updated its statement defending The Netherlands’ disqualification, saying “Joost’s behaviour was in clear breach of contest rules which are designed to ensure there is a safe working environment for all staff and to protect the production.

“We have a zero-tolerance policy towards inappropriate behaviour at our events and will always take necessary action to address threats to staff – no matter who they come from.”

Oh, the irony.

What is particularly galling about the EBU’s declaration of “zero-tolerance towards inappropriate behaviour” is that this policy was not applied equally to every offender at . As Gabe Milne of ESCUnited.com wrote on X-Twitter:

“If you have a ‘zero tolerance policy towards inappropriate behaviour at our events’, then why was harassment of artists and press ignored for the entire week?”

The Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS confirmed to news outlet NU.nl that it submitted an official report to the EBU on May 10th, a day before ’s disqualification, about the unsafe environment at , especially in the so-called “delegation bubble.” It also criticised the EBU’s use of anti-booing technology.

The Irish Independent reported that RTÉ One’s broadcast of the Grand Final on Saturday pulled in 666,000 viewers, a 54% share of the audience, double the figures of last year’s contest in Liverpool.

Ireland’s entry placed
6th in the jury vote;
6th in the public vote; and
6th overall.

The Portuguese broadcaster RTP has requested a meeting with the EBU to “clarify” several incidents during the Grand Final. According to RTP its request is supported by several countries, including France, Spain, Croatia and Norway.

Importantly, France and Spain represent two of the “big 5” countries in Eurovision, which contribute the most financially to the contest.

callme_jc,
@callme_jc@mastodon.scot avatar

Chief among RTP’s complaints is the EBU discriminated against them, by delaying publication of the Portuguese entrant ’s Grand Final performance video, and initially using footage from the semi-final.

RTP says the EBU told them it was because “your competitor has pro-Palestine motifs painted on her nails.” RTP replied, “so?”

https://www.nme.com/news/music/portuguese-eurovision-entry-iolandas-finale-performance-video-replaced-due-to-pro-palestine-motifs-on-her-nails-3755538

For anyone keeping score, the EBU has so far received reports of incidents at from The Netherlands, Ireland, the UK, Portugal, Slovenia and Switzerland. A number of broadcasters and artists have so far made statements, including Norway, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, Spain, Croatia, France and Italy.

That’s 14 participating countries out of a possible 37, including four of the “big 5” countries. The EBU has work to do, which we can so far assume they’ll just sweep under the rug.

The EBU is in its “find out” stage, after so much fucking around. First, by accepting so much money from an Israeli company sponsor, Moroccan Oil; second, by not excluding Israel from this year’s after setting precedent with Russia in 2022; third, by not treating delegations equally and (as yet) not punishing the Israeli delegation for multiple reported incidents of harassment inside the Eurovision bubble, while disqualifying The Netherlands MID-CONTEST for alleged verbal assault.

Had another, more wide-ranging, demo with Apple Vision Pro today. Ask me anything.

Me, sitting on a couch, wearing an Apple Vision Pro, making a pinch gesture with my right hand.

callme_jc,
@callme_jc@mastodon.scot avatar

@gruber I have a near-perfect prescription, but I’m guessing the eye tracking won’t be able to compensate for my strabismus?

callme_jc,
@callme_jc@mastodon.scot avatar

@gruber Thank you. Not so much double vision, more like I can only “look” or focus through one eye at a time, switching between them fairly rapidly. It produces a slight squint in the “inactive” eye. Corrective lenses might dampen the effect: my prescription is within ZEISS’s acceptable range.

I’ve never tried on a AR headset before, but Vision Pro is the first headset with its heightened level of eye tracking that gives me pause.

So Disney has started banning 3rd party tour guides in their parks. These tour guides charge between $150-$300 an hour to guide you though Disney. I thought that was expensive until I read how much Disney itself charges: a whopping $450-900(!!) an hour. Holy crap!

Also this bit from the following story is why I will probably never visit a Disney park again:

“Vacationers at the parks complain visiting has become complicated and expensive… requiring online research.”

What’s your worst Apple battle-scar & the story behind it?

I’ll go first: Wasn’t thinking & slammed my backpack onto the ground with my unprotected iPad inside. 🎒

callme_jc,

@BasicAppleGuy Cleaning fingerprints off my iPad Pro, it slid off its stupid Apple-designed magnetic leather sleeve with no sides and landed on the concrete floor. Its replacement now permanently lives in a case WITH SIDES.

With all the posts about I decided to take the plunge. Started by re-watching the original movie starring James Spader & Kurt Russell. I had forgotten a lot of it. The last 1/3 of the flick is forgettable but the entire world building/discovery is compelling.

The pilot of SG-1 picks up a year after the events of the film & so far I like it. Richard Dean Anderson as Russell’s character is interesting. He’s now the alpha male instead of the nerd (Macgyver), interesting role reversal

callme_jc,
@callme_jc@mastodon.scot avatar

@gedeonm I only saw the show in bits and pieces when it first aired on TV over here, so one summer I decided to binge the whole thing.

The whole Farscape takeover towards the end was a little weird, but I particularly enjoyed the gate malfunction episodes, much like the transporter malfunction episodes in Star Trek.

Does anything in the Apple multiverse sync less reliably than Shortcuts? It just botched all of my folders and organization for the umpteenth time. I can’t even imagine how infuriating this must be for people who are more serious Shortcuts users than me.

callme_jc,

@gruber Not sync-related, but my (two!) Shortcuts don’t appear in the Share Sheet half the time. Sometimes it takes force-closing the Shortcuts app to fix it.
