    The problem is people won't quit twitter (a lot of my friends are still on there with weak excuses why) and reddit users will come back because most people generally won't do short term pain for longterm gain. It's just not how humans are wired and it's painful to watch. I hope I'm proved wrong.

    ceremus,

    @grumpygamer So far as twitter goes, my thought is it won't last much beyond when it defaults. They have a $1B annual debt they're surely not covering. In the meantime I have BlueBlocker installed which helps deny the blue checkmark accounts the algorithm boost they paid for, and the subsequent large blocklist makes twitter run worse. It's inevitably dying, may as well cost Elon more cash as it sinks.

    Music publishers sue Twitter, slam Musk for calling DMCA a “plague on humanity”

    Publishers sue after licensing talks between Twitter and record labels stalled.

    https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2023/06/music-publishers-sue-twitter-slam-musk-for-calling-dmca-a-plague-on-humanity/?utm_brand=arstechnica&utm_social-type=owned&utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social

    ceremus,

    @arstechnica Here's the thing for me. Musk complaining about the DMCA isn't evidence of wrongdoing. Wrongdoing in Twitter's case would be the labels issuing DMCA takedowns and Twitter not complying with those requests. But I looked in the original complaint, there's no mention of DMCA takedown requests taking place, only general "we notified Twitter of infringing material." What does that mean? Did they go through the proper channels to have infringements taken down or not?

    ceremus,

    @arstechnica All that is required for Twitter to be under the DMCA safe harbor protections is to have an agent registered with the Copyright office and comply with legitimate requests for each infringing material (and go through the appeals process if the user chooses to do so).

    If the labels didn't specifically engage in DMCA reports, then they can't exactly whine to the court about unreported infringements. (I mean they can, but their case will get tossed.)

Half the time anyone shows half a shred of interest in Linux and find the useless"which is the best" articles, or heaven forbid, they find an absolute spreadsheet of distros jumbled with infinite assortments of DE's and package managers and die of decision paralysis.

    Got a new phone recently, every time I do I get a kick out of setting up ScummVM. Having a bunch of classic PC titles portable to play any time is incredible, never could have predicted it. Shout out to those who loved these games who make it possible.

    Screenshot of the ScummVM main screen on Android.

    ceremus,

    While we're at it, throwback to figuring out how to put #ScummVM on a Nintendo DS.

    ceremus, to random

    Fuck Nintendo. No one hates their fans like they do.

    Emulation was ruled legal as fair use years ago in cases like Sony vs. Bleem. If Nintendo had any ACTUAL case against Dolphin (or any other emulator) they could have sent a cease and desist to the Dolphin devs themselves and pursued a legal case directly. The fact that they're abusing the DMCA /again/, as they have with Youtube content demonstrating emulation, shows they know they have no legal footing.

    https://www.pcgamer.com/nintendo-sends-valve-dmca-notice-to-block-steam-release-of-wii-emulator-dolphin/

    ceremus,

    They're just a bunch of cowards harassing the people responsible for games preservation, something Nintendo takes no interest in as they close their various eShops.

    I'd assume Dolphin doesn't have the resources, but I would love for them (or SOMEone) to sue their sorry asses. Making a DMCA takedown claim while knowing it is invalid is fraud and can be sued for damages.

    Cancel your WinRAR trial: Windows will soon support RAR, gz, 7z, and other archives

    Windows picked up built-in support for .zip files back in 2000.

    ceremus,

    @arstechnica I'd probably still use 7zip, I'll bet it will still open more formats than their native solution. Not to even mention it's always been fully free and what I've always used in place of winrar.

    Stop using Twitter.

    ceremus,

    @MattHodges

    tired: Don't user twitter

    wired: Go on twitter to block every blue checkmark account you see to negate their algorithm boost, while also creating a burden on the site since large blocklists cause more operational overhead.

    ceremus,

    @mookie I would argue that regardless of ledger quibbling, the broader context being made by my quoted tweet is that of billionaire execs losing an extraordinary amount of ROI because they made disruptive changes to their SM platform without any understanding of their ramifications. If that sounds familiar.

    1/ I'm seeing a lot of talk (still!) of defederating mastodon.social over the recent spam attacks. I have a feeling I'm going to regret this, but as someone on that instance with no current plans to move, I feel like there are some things those who are considering it may not be taking into account. There are loads of patronizing comments that people on this instance are "doing the Fediverse wrong". No, we're not. You can't have a democracy while telling others they can't choose where to be.

    ceremus,

    @AbandonedAmerica
    My growing concern with mastodon.social is it becoming an albatross for the platform at large. Like others have said, you can only expect so much in terms of volunteer community moderation, so it's hard to fault them for not locking down a wave of spambots instantly.

    But dealing with spam is just ONE of the table stakes of moderation responsibility, and this isn't the first time I've seen instances defederate or limit mastodon.social for insufficient moderation.

    ceremus,

    @AbandonedAmerica
    Previous examples weren't just because of spam, but because instance admins were finding their users harassed, and the moderation was dealt with so poorly that the admins were left to assume there was no active moderation in place. While I'm sure that wasn't the case, it goes to show that moderation of any SM platform is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT.

    ceremus,

    @AbandonedAmerica
    Mastodon.social being the largest means it will have the largest challenges in moderation responsibilities. If that was the case months before now, what's it going to look like going forward now that Gargron has set up mastodon.social as the default instance for new signups?

    ceremus,

    @AbandonedAmerica
    I don't have any easy answer for that, and I'm not saying where you should or shouldn't make your account, but as someone who grew up in small online community cultures and have seen the breaking points before, what I can say is that moderation not being taken seriously as the platform grows could be Mastodon's biggest threat. Any SM platform that doesn't take seriously the table stakes of Trust & Safety established by more mature outlets risks serious harm to their users.

    When a company says something like: "the data is uploaded to the cloud" they just mean it's going to their servers

    There is no 'cloud', it's just someone ele's server or PC

    I guess it sounds more magical and less privacy intrusive but it's all the same...

    Don't fall for that bs

    ceremus,

    @stux This has certainly always been true, but definitely not always a bad thing. One of the binds Twitter is in now is the fact that most of their infrastructure is on-prem. They have a massive data center footprint with no easy way to migrate or offload it, so any outages are 99.99% their responsibility. Or more specifically the responsibility of their overworked, stretched thin, cut-to-the-bone support staff.

    Had a busy day, a ‘photo shoot’ with gf, her brother and gf and parents in law. I’m not a photo person, at all but I think they turned out nice! So awkward that it made it funny

    Weird thing though.. I asked for digital copies after we bought them but he only does paper :nkoFacepalm:

    Can’t do a thing with a paper photo and taking a picture of a picture results in big quality loss, I get that I don’t get the full RAW photos but something digital would be nice for some photo editing 🥹

    ceremus,

    @stux If you hire a photographer that knows what they're doing, they'll give you a contract first telling you exactly what you're buying. Usually those contracts will include digital copies as well as some kind of packaged print offering. A prints-only offering would be... unusual these days.

    As you said, no photographer worth their salt will ever give you their RAW files if they have any respect for their own copyright.
