@djlink it’s not tho …. “When receiving messages, apps will need to connect to WhatsApp’s servers.” Its’ “other apps can send to/fetch from WhatsApp”+ ( via a special other-apps inbox) (+ only if users opt-in)

Wait, Docker on an Apple Silicon Mac (via OrbStack, but I think anyway) can just magically run Linux containers in either ARM or X86, no problem?

I complain about bloated modern software a lot, but make no mistake, I don't believe it's devs. It's just that storage and RAM has become so cheap that companies don't want to spend money on devs time to optimize software because it will still sell.

@djlink the bloat and it’s causes are at the same time both profoundly complicated and surprising simple: folks like getting stuff done, and the process for setting the conditions for done, with software, is rarely engineering driven, so doesn’t include the engineering concerns around efficiency. So until it’s a problem that can be measured, it’s not a priority. Executing on an engineering task when you don’t have hard resource constraints is easy. Engineers who get shit done get promoted.

Now, repeat the experiment, but this time there are two things to keep in mind: 1) after setting up the system, you will be reborn into the world you designed with no memory of having designed it, and 2) you will be randomly assigned a gender, race, age, wealth, intelligence, and ability level. This thought experiment was created by philosopher John Rawls (1921-2002).

Someone just asked what revolutionary product has Google shipped outside of search. At first I was surprised at the question then realized that it’s been over ten years since Google any meaningful new product.

They’ve just been canceling projects and shipping redundant chat apps for a decade.
