@keenan @nickheer does the RSS feed only spit out previews or could you pull data out of that? Or it might be possible to smash away at a node script to get the xml into markdown or somesuch

@Luke I think there's an argument to be made for it. I also think hosting your own content, decentralizing and generally eschewing the offerings of large companies with questionable track records is going to continue to be important.

@joesteel oh certainly — if anything AI free isn't an outright ban on all of the things that are currently being sold as such. Photo recognition on device is super helpful, as is improved autocorrect. Calling that AI feels disingenuous given its limitations and, to your point, so many of these companies are bungling it or outright ruining massively successful products (we're desperately short on search that doesn't suck anymore and Arc went from interesting browser to god knows what).

@joesteel that's one of the strange things to me — the NYT are suing AI and yet also publishing Kevin Roose who's coverage is typically fawning and completely free of any critical investigative work.

The thought of these companies buying traditional publishing houses is gross too and none of them have shown a viable path to profitability. MSFT/Apple et al have money to burn but given the costs and the "free" offerings to hook folks I dunno how they square that circle.

@joesteel that's another part of the cycle that's been surreal to see play out and it seems very shortsighted. Companies like reddit had vanishingly little user goodwill left and doing that seems like a great way to ruin what was left of it. I don't see how they sell anyone on contributing to a corpus of data that'll just be scraped or sold.

OpenAI's doing the Uber thing where they push the change past regulators/courts/everyone as inevitable before any sort of legal action is possible.
