Google got back to me with a statement that said the mistakes came from “generally very uncommon queries, and aren’t representative of most people’s experiences.”

Meanwhile, if you search what some might consider a common query like "african country beginning with K," it tells you that none exist.

A lot of products are overspending their innovation budget.

Innovation budget = the limit on cognitive load for having to understand new and unique mental models in your product

Basically... you don't need to innovate on every UI component.

A settings page should probably just be a settings page.

Don't innovate on things that aren't worth innovating on. Spend that "budget" where it really matters for the impact you want to have with your product.
