@ai6yr @andybrwn Those SDRs are a lot of fun and RNZ comes in great here in northern CA. I started with one of the RTL-SDRs then upgraded to a HF+ Discovery. Good for shortwave, DXing AM stations, weird airport beacons, as well as hearing the Ham bands and bunch more.

Just so you know where we are and understand that they're ALL fucking fascists and they're GOING FOR IT.

"In a stunning reversal, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-K.Y.) is urging the Senate G.O.P. caucus to vote against the bipartisan border security and foreign defense aid package. It comes after spending weeks helping a bipartisan group of senators craft it, and just hours after he spoke in favor of the legislation."

cosmog,
@cosmog@sfba.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 McConnell is definitely the worst, but other articles I've seen describe this 'no' vote as tactical to slow the bill down and stall for time, and not really a stunning reversal. Not saying he doesn't do fascist stuff. But not sure this qualifies.

Not so long ago I would have been shocked to see the Sacramento Bee editorial board endorse such a progressive candidate for mayor and the 'revolution' she proposes for city government. Same goes for the Bee's endorsement of Barbara Lee for U.S. Senator a couple weeks back. This is the territory that used to be held down by the city's (no longer in print) alt-weekly, the Sac News and Review. Not sure if it's just a function of younger folks coming on to the editorial board, or some other shift in the local media landscape. But I like it.

Also agree that a Cofer vs McCarty runoff would be the best debate for Sacramento to have. Though I don't doubt the ability of some consultants/PACs to turn the race into absolute negative garbage.

Also still don't think Sacramento needs a mayor. We'd be better off with multi-member districts and slates that articulate competing policy proposals.

Was feeling kind of crummy because of the wind and (minor) destruction around my place and not having electricity all day. Then I went to see Superchunk and Fucked Up and saw friends I havent seen in a long time, and now I'm feeling A-ok! Still no electricity though.

A simple thought about the Threads debate: The fediverse is a federation of communities with many many community members, who now have plenty of choices on how to engage in social networks online - Thanks to the ActivityPub protocol.

That choice is not being threatened by adding more options.

Let’s be welcoming and communicate (and act on) our values and server rules!

cosmog,
@cosmog@sfba.social avatar

@seb @soaproot @cd24 @Ingurido @neuralgraffiti @Moritz @briskwhisk I'm mostly optimistic about Threads getting federated. But is there any technical concern about a giant new instance moving into the neighborhood? I've seen people say Threads could swamp smaller instances, but I don't know enough to really think through if that's true. But for example, if someone on SFBA (or a smaller server) had a post that went viral among some huge number of Threads users, would that be a problem?

Reading about the website that I will forever refer to as Twitter removing headlines from linked articles, and that seems bad and very dumb.

But also a lot of the time also does not show preview images or headlines when I share news articles. Especially from my local newspaper . Why do previews show up for links from some sites but not others?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/10/05/twitter-x-news-headlines-removed/

cosmog,
@cosmog@sfba.social avatar

@ai6yr Thanks! Those all make sense. But since previews load up on Twitter (though just images now I guess) seems like the Bee site just doesn't play nice with Mastodon the way it does with Twitter?

cosmog,

@ai6yr Ah, or I suppose Sacbee could fix it on their site if they knew/cared. Ah well. Thanks for the info!

Interesting in the wake of the Capital Public Radio financial train wreck to see the and State discover that students don't benefit from the KXJZ license or participate in the station in any meaningful way.

Here's a story I did... 20 years ago (?!) about just that very thing.

https://www.newsreview.com/sacramento/content/radio-control/29527/

Much has changed since then. That was before CapRadio launched "Insight" and lots of other good stuff. But much is the same, especially the building of expensive new buildings and leaving students out of the picture.

My suggestion? There's a new window opening next month.

https://www.prometheusradio.org/new-lpfm-stations-application-window-november

CSUS/CapRadio should try for a license for KSSU and also do a "KSSU on CapRadio" show. Also bring back Hey Listen, KZAP (on CapRadio) and Blues Party. And stop building new buildings and mismanaging funds, obvs.

Yikes. It would be nice to hear from some actual CapRadio folks about this audit and takeover by #SacramentoState. Given that Wood/Karlo started firing people as soon as they arrived on the scene, CSUS taking over the station seems like a scary proposition.

On the other hand, gratifying to see the auditors call out CapRadio for shutting students out programming/involvement with the station. That should have been addressed long ago.

So many upsetting details in this story. What the fuck are we doing here? What is the point of supporting our "local" station (chain) if you're just going to gut it and make it a super expensive podcast player?

"Brunner and Newhouse were told that the station was trying to reduce the number of 'live voices' on air."

"In an email to The Bee, Karlo said that the board and management were 'guided by audience data in these decisions.'"

"Karlo started at CapRadio eight days before the layoffs, summoned by his friend Luke Wood, the new president of Sacramento State."

"In March, the Sacramento Business Journal reported that CapRadio was tapping into operating reserve funds in order to pay for loans taken out for the construction of its new downtown headquarters....The station also tapped into employees’ health care funds, cutting coverage of premiums."

If you’ve never been to the Denver CO Casa Bonita, you may have seen it on a South Park episode. A dining experience with cliff divers, gorilla chases and sub par Mexican food, all mixed with the smell of chlorine and sopapillas.

During the pandemic, it unfortunately closed down and looked like it wouldn’t come back. 😔 But the creators of South Park actually bought it and it’s being renovated! Can’t wait to visit again. 😅

The video shows a man diving from a man made cliff down into a chlorinated pool. This cliff is inside a restaurant in Denver, CO

cosmog,
@cosmog@sfba.social avatar

@box464 That is awesome. I haven't seen the episode but I did live in Denver as a tyke in the 70s and have a really strong memory of going to a restaurant where they had a gunfight show where the bad guy gets shot and falls off the cliff into the pool. This must be the place!
