    Hey @ZachWeinersmith I'm reading your book, why do the closed ecology systems use plants and not algae to produce O2? I thought algae were much better at this than plants

    @ZachWeinersmith Oh, right, it was right under my nose 🤦‍♀️

    But did it have to be eaten? Wouldn’t just keeping it around be worth it?

    So, maybe it's just the random assortment of books I read, but it seems like social media has been a mental health calamity for teens, especially girls? I'm always wary of theories that Things Were Better in My Day, but it does seem like smartphones + addiction psychology + social media is a dangerous combination for developing brains.What's the argument against?

    dancer_storm,
    @dancer_storm@mathstodon.xyz avatar

    @glyph @ZachWeinersmith I wonder if that's also the deal with "screen time is bad for kids". Maybe if I watch chill nature videos with my future kid it's close enough to a park walk that it's a net benefit? But kid's tv is more often cartoons, very different type of engagement.

    It is strange how many completely arbitrary and unproven numbers we live by:

    10k Steps
    The BMI
    2000 Calories
    6 inch Penises
    8 Glasses of Water
    8 Hours of Sleep
    8 Spiders A Year

    @RickiTarr ok but here's my favorite arbitrary numbers: in Brazil, the friendly way to say hi is with one, two or three kisses on alternating cheeks. The exact number varies by region 😘😘😘

    Do you think there are "normal" people? If so, what constitutes normal? If not, why not?

    dancer_storm,
    @dancer_storm@mathstodon.xyz avatar

    @RickiTarr we put human traits and behaviours in scales then get some conditional averages (e.g. the average woman has a higher voice pitch than the average man, the average 9 year old child is a certain height), then come up with thresholds around that average and call whatever is inside "normal".

    Observing more people and being flexible widens the thresholds. Certain belief systems narrow them. Sometimes being outside the threshold warrants intervention (e.g. a child that is shorter than average due to malnourishment). Sometimes it does not but people will sell interventions anyway (e.g. breast implants). Sometimes the intervention is not strictly necessary but can it be attributed to overly narrow ranges or salespeople? I don't think so, my grandmother got a breast implant after a cancer surgery.

    Sometimes the intervention puts you back within the range but that can be good (e.g. wearing glasses or hearing aids) or bad (e.g. conversion therapy).

    Sometimes morality requires us to change the definition of normal to push things out of it, e.g. husbands that beat wives. Sometimes we must change it to include things, like gay marriages.

    When someone says they don't want to be normal/reject normality/reject standards, it could mean "on average people around me consider this thing to be outside the acceptable range, but I think it should be inside and honestly this whole range thing is made up in your mind", or it could be "I like that this thing is unacceptable because I can provoke others with it".

    So, the hubs and I have a one of the long term couple debates about when is the best time to shower.

    For me, a shower is calming and relaxing, so I tend to do it in the evening or before bed.

    He says it's refreshing and energizing, so it helps him wake up, and get going in the morning.

    How about y'all, is it relaxing, refreshing, something in between, or something different entirely? When do you normally do it? Have you always done it the same or have you changed over the years?

    dancer_storm,
    @dancer_storm@mathstodon.xyz avatar

    @RickiTarr it's both. Showers fix everything!

    Can't sleep? Shower relaxes you.
    Didn't sleep enough? Shower wakes you up.
    Feeling cold? Hot shower.
    Feeling hot? Cold shower.
    Have a cold? Shower steam helps liquefy the mucus and helps with throat dryness.
    Hangover? You know it.
    Missing your ex? Don't call them, take a shower.

    Can we quantify how much TPMs are contributing to the exhaustion of entropy in the universe?

    @vwbusguy when I learned about the entropy end of the world I became obsessed with energy conservation for a little while lol

    True Confession:

    I don't think I could be with a person who wasn't absolutely enthusiastic about eating my pussy. I don't think my self confidence could take that hit.

    If you have a True Confession, you're willing to share, drop it, I won't judge, I mean, unless it's hurting someone, don't purposely hurt people, obviously, unless they are into that, you know, consent is key, it doesn't have to be sexual, just whatever, you could confess that you ramble sometimes, or use run on sentences, I could empathize with that.

    chu, (edited ) to climate

    In conversation w a friend, she was surprised when I said we won't have electricity after social collapse. She asked "why? What happens to electricity?"

    I had to then explain that infrastructure needs people to maintain and if things fall apart, nobody will keep the generators going or the wires in check. She seemed surprised by this.

    Is this why people don't seem worried about what's coming? They have no idea???

    I was trying to hide my shock that I had to explain this to someone who isn't a child. I think I take too much for granted and assume too much of people's ability to be logical.

    Now her obsession with social issues at the expense of makes sense. I was always wondering how someone on the left would not care about collapse. I have tried to explain before that as much as I share her concerns about the many dire issues that do need dealing with, none of it matters if climate change causes collapse. Then we won't have social housing, or equity, or any of the other things she cares about. (she was even part of a group that protested demanding "affordable gas")

    Her look of shock finally helped me realize that she has absolutely no idea what means. No idea. I've been arguing with her all these years and she's had no idea.

    I don't even know what to say.

    There's no way she's the only one. Lots of well intentioned people say "yes climate is important but....".

    I am here to tell you that none of those other issues will even exist in the face of climate and social collapse.

    I don't know if the average person can even imagine the number of deaths that we are facing when the society we built loses electricity.

    dancer_storm,
    @dancer_storm@mathstodon.xyz avatar

    @chu but why wouldn't the people be available to fix that infrastructure? I'm not saying it would not be a problem but it's not like the entire grid would go off at once and nobody could restore any part of it, is it?
