bad_immigrant, to Russia

I'm very confused sometimes by russian leftist movement: Prigozhin on the way to starting civil war in ... meanwhile leftists are organizing bookfair and a punk concert.

@bad_immigrant good to know that Russian leftists are just as inept as Western leftists. Why storm the barricades when you can seize power through coffee mornings and book stalls?

52fighters, to Russia

The people in Wagner-occupied Russia seem almost bored. They are so far removed from the political process that they just don't care who is running Russia. Wagner militia patiently wait in line for their breakfast. https://twitter.com/twmcltd/status/1672571757977321472

danjac,

@52fighters I get the feeling that revolutions and coups throughout history would mostly involve a bunch of bored soldiers standing around waiting for orders.

    @jynersolives colonialism always comes home. For example the French officers in Algeria tried to depose deGaulle because they thought he betrayed them.

    aarnegranlund, to Russia

    To my international followers: I live 75 km from the Russian border. There is a military coup going on in Russia.

    I've never been in that country but my family had to evacuate twice from the Lost Karelia during WW II. Both of my grandfathers were officers in the Finnish Army.

    danjac,
    @danjac@masto.ai avatar

    @aarnegranlund I'm about 30km away. Very peaceful Juhannus with all the chaos going on over the border.

    Now it looks like - who has been propped up by for years - has buggered off out of to and the Belarus soldiers who have been fighting for are eyeing their homeland with a view to throwing out the corrupt government there. 🤣

    sapphrodite, to Russia

    Regarding , is this the first time a military coup has been carried out by a private mercenary group?

    danjac,
    @danjac@masto.ai avatar

    @sapphrodite mercenaries have been behind a few coups (or coup attempts) in Africa. Ironically, Wagner has provided support for African regimes (e.g. Chad) so this is something they have a lot of experience with.

    losttourist, to Russia

    I don't claim to be an expert on this stuff in the slightest, but some of the more serious commentators are claiming that Prigozhin (leader of the Wagner Group of mercenaries) has his sights set on being given full control of the entire Russian military.

    He's not after Putin's job and it's possible this has even been planned with Putin's tacit support (it's a way to get rid of his generals without him getting rid of his generals).

    Time will tell.

    danjac,
    @danjac@masto.ai avatar

    @losttourist yeah Prigozhin has been careful not to criticize Putin directly. As the old Russian saying goes, "blame the bad boyars, not the Tsar".

    But this also undermines Putin's authority: at best he becomes Prigozhin's prisoner, reliant on him for his security and survival.

    danjac, to random
    @danjac@masto.ai avatar

    I wonder what Prigozhin's endgame is here.

    Take over Russia? Sure, but then he would need allies in Moscow to do it. He wouldn't have taken Rostov without some provisional support from other factions.

    Would he end the Ukraine War? Maybe, he already said there was no reason to start it, so he has leeway to negotiate a ceasefire. When Lenin seized Russia he immediately secured peace with Germany.

    Who knows though, the only thing you can expect from Russia is either chaos or tyranny.

    danjac,
    @danjac@masto.ai avatar

    But even if we get a ceasefire in Ukraine, the thought of the butcher of Syria running Russia should be chilling to Western leaders. Any cessation of hostilities would merely be tactical. Be careful what you wish for.

    danjac,
    @danjac@masto.ai avatar

    @andrewfelix @Setok the USSR was still a tyranny though, despite Khrushev's "thaw" (and he didn't stay in power for long).

    danjac,
    @danjac@masto.ai avatar

    @kenmccann @Setok I've pointed this out already. Prigozhin may wish to call a ceasefire, as he sees the war as unwinnable and launched on a bad premise. But long-term he will just use any ceasefire as a tactical pause. So in the short-term good for Ukraine (maybe, and chaos in Russian military will give them opportunity). Long term, nobody - least of all Ukrainians - can sleep easy with Prigozhin in power.

    danjac,
    @danjac@masto.ai avatar

    @kenmccann @Setok

    Prigozhin may want peace in Ukraine not out of any moral compunctions, but pure calculation - it's unwinnable, so better to pull out with something salvageable (e.g. hold onto the 2014 gains). Lenin did the same with Brest-Litovsk in 1918.

    danjac,
    @danjac@masto.ai avatar

    @kenmccann @Setok I think the stumbling point will be Western support. If a peace offer is on the table, the West (and the world in general, especially countries relying on Ukrainian grain) will want a return to status quo of Feb 2022, regardless of what Kiev wants, and taking Crimea will be impossible without Western materiel.

    danjac,
    @danjac@masto.ai avatar

    @kenmccann @Setok on the other hand, a total collapse of the Russian army into civil war is not impossible either, in which case Ukraine will be pushing against an open door.

    danjac,
    @danjac@masto.ai avatar

    @kenmccann @Setok F16s need continuing support - new missiles, spare parts etc. And Crimea is a natural fortress - France/UK couldn't take the whole peninsula in the Crimean War, despite overwhelming naval support.

    It's doable though if the Russian army is in full collapse/retreat. After all, Russia seized it without a shot in 2014.

    danjac, to random
    @danjac@masto.ai avatar

    So Prigozhin was Putin's chef. Stalin's chef was...Putin's granddad.

    In British terms, that's like the country were gripped in a power struggle between Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver.
