@sapphrodite mercenaries have been behind a few coups (or coup attempts) in Africa. Ironically, Wagner has provided support for African regimes (e.g. Chad) so this is something they have a lot of experience with.

I don't claim to be an expert on this stuff in the slightest, but some of the more serious commentators are claiming that Prigozhin (leader of the Wagner Group of mercenaries) has his sights set on being given full control of the entire Russian military.

He's not after Putin's job and it's possible this has even been planned with Putin's tacit support (it's a way to get rid of his generals without him getting rid of his generals).

Time will tell.

@losttourist yeah Prigozhin has been careful not to criticize Putin directly. As the old Russian saying goes, "blame the bad boyars, not the Tsar".

But this also undermines Putin's authority: at best he becomes Prigozhin's prisoner, reliant on him for his security and survival.

I wonder what Prigozhin's endgame is here.

Take over Russia? Sure, but then he would need allies in Moscow to do it. He wouldn't have taken Rostov without some provisional support from other factions.

Would he end the Ukraine War? Maybe, he already said there was no reason to start it, so he has leeway to negotiate a ceasefire. When Lenin seized Russia he immediately secured peace with Germany.

Who knows though, the only thing you can expect from Russia is either chaos or tyranny.

But even if we get a ceasefire in Ukraine, the thought of the butcher of Syria running Russia should be chilling to Western leaders. Any cessation of hostilities would merely be tactical. Be careful what you wish for.

In British terms, that's like the country were gripped in a power struggle between Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver.

Just noticed all my superfeedr subscriptions just stop sending updates, and all the Wordpress feeds using pushpress have a broken websub implementation that hasn't been fixed for years now.

If you have a protocol that to all intents and purposes only Google uses, is it officially on life support? Why even bother with all the W3C nonsense and just call it a Google Service (tm)?

Again ChatGPT utterly fails at a simple task. This time "give me a Python function that turns URLs in a blob of HTML text into anchor links, ignoring existing URLs in <a> and <img> tags". Completely incorrect answers, repeating the same errors over and over, complete waste of time. I got further trawling through Stackoverflow, awful though it can be.

We're meant to be scared that this is the new Skynet?
