PM: How long is this going to take you?
Me: No idea, I've never done it before.
PM: Well what's your estimate?
Me: Any estimate would be useless because I've no idea what difficulties I'll encounter.
PM: But I need to put a number on the plan. How about 15 days?
Me: Sure, why not? Let's also estimate I'll grow wings and complete this project while flying.

davebauerart,
@davebauerart@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft Whatever number it's always at least x2 + 50%.

"Any social media platform that dips under 10% poster will fail, but as the early days of Bluesky demonstrated, if you over index on posters, you will have endless fucking chaos. It is possible that posters are deeply unwell. Certainly they are far too online." https://www.theverge.com/24058356/trolls-social-media-commenter-lurker-reply-guy-threads

davebauerart,
@davebauerart@mastodon.social avatar

@taylorlorenz This leaves out what I would say are the interesting middle. People who post to share with others in the community, not to influence, not to stir trouble but for real human connection. They are out there and always have been.

I just want to write some code, maybe make some music, maybe draw some pictures.

I don't want to be mad about blockchains, I don't want to be mad about GenAI, I don't want to be mad about terrible backfiring "think of the children" legislation, I don't want to be terrified about the rising tide of bigoted, racist fascism ending democracy in my lifetime.

I don't want you to have to be mad about all that either.

I wish the world would leave us all alone for a little bit.

davebauerart,
@davebauerart@mastodon.social avatar

@glyph I've been sketching daily similar to another commenter, as part of . I drew a cat (a bunch of them, a dog, a croissant, a llama)

@cory Great read, so glad to see the spirit of the original web is still out there. Also love the "discuss on mastodon" link, I might have to borrow that idea.

@gvwilson You forgot to put "Emacs" in old for editor/debugger. (I learned in a very specific environment) I have switched to VS Code.

Whenever I post a bunch of stuff on here I get superstitious. Has the site actually managed to process my toots yet? Sometimes I get bursts of notifications that cluster together in odd ways. Sometimes things are so close to real time this feels like a chat app, sometimes it feels like a fidonet email system with even initial reactions delayed for hours. I cannot help but wonder if this is the architecture of Mastodon or some property of my audience or just Internet weather.

davebauerart,
@davebauerart@mastodon.social avatar

@glyph I've been waiting since 1988 for someone to mention Fidonet.

“Huge scam” is a bit much, but I’m nodding along to the points. Remember that REST's intent wasn’t originally to over-engineer frontends with React. The goal was to support mobile apps on iOS and Android mobile apps while providing a backend API for whatever fits your business model. React and other JS frontend frameworks came next as a way to reuse that same work that was already there. https://mastodon.publicinterest.town/@krusynth/111947834674060983

davebauerart,
@davebauerart@mastodon.social avatar

@webology Makes sense! I have luckily stuck to mostly backend programming but am I am very curious about stuff like HTMX as someone else mentioned.

davebauerart,
@davebauerart@mastodon.social avatar

@webology Never heard of REST being intended for mobile apps as it came around several years too early for that. I thought it was more to keep the API interface as close to readable and usable by humans as possible. I'm pretty old though.

davebauerart,
@davebauerart@mastodon.social avatar

@gvwilson @sue I get it, but also 25 years ago I learned how to run linux, and spent 48 hours downloading Oracle by FTP to work on one of the first web app platforms, so everything is relative to that.

A belt sander is useful for more than just sanding. For example, you can use one for testing the output of a generator hub for a bicycle

Through a series of connections I found Jan.ai https://jan.ai/ open-source self-hosted AI. I have been experimenting with Claude.ai to read my podcast transcripts and why not see what I can do locally?

davebauerart,
@davebauerart@mastodon.social avatar

@webology I still haven't gotten this to work, I think my hardware may not be up to the task! It has a frontend to download the models and interact with them, but is not necessarily a piece of cake for a total newbie.

davebauerart,
@davebauerart@mastodon.social avatar

@webology I will let you know, priorities shifted but I am curious and I love their web site design.

davebauerart,
@davebauerart@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online That sucks! I ruined the trackpad on my macbook replacing the battery but it's been going for years now. I have been buying he $30 power adapters about once every 6 months though. I think the contacts on Magsafe connector are eventually going to wear completely off.

Hey did you know writing is hard!? I had some ideas of re-building your personal learning community in the wake of realizing big social media companies are not going to do it for you. I had a bunch of great ideas walking the dog, wrote a bunch of phrases in my phone, and then when I sat down days later I forgot what they meant. Luckily I just starting riffing on those ideas and most of it came back to me. Now I have a longer list of disjointed concepts for later.

davebauerart,
@davebauerart@mastodon.social avatar

Luckily I was able to just go all stream of consciousness on the notes and recover some of the lost ideas. Still needs a mountain of work, but at least there are some sentences in there I can edit later.

davebauerart,
@davebauerart@mastodon.social avatar

@webology I had not and that's a good idea, I usually have a bluetooth headset and there's not too many people walking to hear my talking to myself!
