Fascinating post by Josh Ellis about the origin of place names in Taiwan. Many place names were originally based on Tai-gi or Austronesian languages. In the 1920s the names were changed to Japanese. Many of the current place names are actually Japanese with Mandarin pronunciation.

I buy the take that a goal of buying Twitter was to stop progressive movements that were organizing there.

These movements were and are changing the world for the better.

The fediverse needs to be built to be their forever home: a place to join together across borders to make the world better for everyone, with equal opportunities for all.

I still, despite everything, after all this time, believe this is the promise of the internet.

@maegul @ben Mozilla already have their own instance in beta. I see a lot of opportunities for universities and media orgs to create their own instances, too. Although so far it doesn't seem to have happened.

The Secretary General of Amnesty International, Agnes Callamard, recently visited Taiwan. She praised Taiwan's civil society and protections of human rights in the face of political and military pressure from China. However, areas for improvement include violence against women, the right to peaceful assembly, labour rights, migrant and refugee rights, prison conditions, and the death penalty

@imrehg Yes, Taiwan often responds to this kind of international pressure but I don't think many of these issues are going to figure prominently in the election campaign.

Explainer: Why Pita Didn’t Become Prime Minister

This analysis suggests Pita Limjaroenrat is unlikely to become prime minister. The next option is a Pheu Thai candidate, most likely Srettha Thavisin, with Move Forward's support

My analysis: Any compromise beyond this would go against the election result and Thai people's expectations of democracy. Expect protests and ongoing political turmoil at the very least
