An in has been dealing with weeks of criticism & turmoil for having a foreign logo in a presentation they submitted to the government.

The reason? Essentially, copying & pasting of copyrighted images & not realizing they were watermarked. It could have been avoided w/ some basic and practices.

A friend connected me to someone he knows in my city, via Reddit.

My excitement about potentially meeting another westerner here was quickly tempered by finding several posts on his profile.

Depressing to see someone actively tooting about respond to one of my posts and denying . Not the first time I've seen or experienced this.

Though, notably, I've yet to meet an actual who does this. It's nearly always western leftists.

Too much criticism of 's ignoring basic facts about &

A reminder about why vehicles are so cheap - more than mere "innovation"

  • non-existent labor protections, & no real labor unions in Chinese factories = cheap workforce (unlike unionized Detroit)

  • minimal lacking sourcing standards for raw materials = widespread supply chain & abuses

  • massive subsidies & domestic market protectionism

ncoca,

@adnan They certainly do - the Forced Labor Prevention act prohibits any goods linked to () https://www.cbp.gov/trade/forced-labor/UFLPA

A lot of goods are implicated - https://c4ads.org/commentary/fault-lines/

In general, tariffs generally aim to protect key domestic industries, like automobiles, from unfair competition.

ncoca,
@ncoca@social.coop avatar

@Alon @adnan Definitely, remember the tariffs against Japanese automakers in the 1980s?

But for all the issues US, , , etc, face w/ trade b/t each other, is completely different. At the very least, I'd appreciate if those criticizing 's tariff would at least recognize that.

Also lessons have been learned - American solar is growing. Europe, which failed to protect against cheap Chinese imports/dumping (or ) saw its solar industry decimated.

@njwatt @jeremy_list Definitely was worse there, but sad to see some of it here too.

And of definitely there was paid PRC content on the birdsite. China was a top country as a source of revenue for Twitter before . I would imagine it's even bigger now.

If you got upset at me for pointing out that more people died of Covid under Biden than Trump, in large part because Biden rolled back common sense restrictions that were in place under Trump...

Then you'll hate me pointing out that Trump introduced a 25% tariff on Chinese EVs, and Biden is upping that to 100% tariff.

We can't allow the US to get off of fossil fuels... unless US billionaires win! 🤡

@mekkaokereke Don't forget why are so cheap - more than mere "innovation"

  • non-existent labor protections, & no real labor unions in Chinese factories = cheap workforce.

  • worst sourcing standards for raw materials = using cheap minerals from regions with & abuses (see recent Lead The Charge rankings)

  • massive subsidies & domestic market protectionism.

IMO - if can help build domestic EV -, good. If they protect interest - bad

Does #Microsoft #Word no longer allows people to open .ODT files? Have, a few times, had to safe .ODT files as .DOCX via LibreOffice so that Word users could open it.

.ODT is an open source file format, so its a deliberate choice for Word to not be compatible.

Why do people pay for a shitty product that lacks such basic functionality?

ncoca,
@ncoca@social.coop avatar

@jkn not me, two people I tried to send .ODT files too. I was wondering if it might be because they're using a MacOS Word, or perhaps a corporate version of Office360 with file restrictions?

The worst type of in are the westerners who complain about tourists (quite often, actually , or but they don't know or care to tell the difference) and don't realize that it's actually them who are the most annoying.

I see way more bad or stupid behavior, especially in , from western tourists than Asian tourists.

ncoca,
@ncoca@social.coop avatar

@skinnylatte wow, really? One of my first SE Asian memories is how, back in 2006, when volunteering in rural Thailand, the Korean in our group was, by far, the most popular with locals, as even then Korean dramas were huge.

ncoca,
@ncoca@social.coop avatar

@Blf_tpe Indeed! Especially and - the relationship between them has really improved in the past ~5 years. Koreans alone were 30-40% of inbound tourists in March (Asian countries were 8 of the top 10).

Asian tourists also travel to more parts of , while westerners mostly go to the same 4-5 places.
