I bought this album in 1970 while in high school, for no other reason than I was mezmorized by the cover art, and heard that Miles is hip and I should be listening to him. At the time, I didn't get it and shelved it for years. It took being exposed to much more music to understand what genius is contained on these disks. So much history and influences are amalgamated into this music.

Flora Purim doesn’t have an exceptional voice, but she always surrounded herself with great musicians (both American and Brazilian), and created an interesting unique sound. This is one of her best from 1974. Love the track with Carlos Santana’s screaming guitar solo.

Padres Win! I have been to 3 games at Petco Park so far this year. have won all three. They have scored 12, 10, and 6 runs in each of those games.

I have worn the same clothes for all 3 games and will continue to do so as long as they are winning. Obviously, my choice of what to wear has a lot to do with those wins. Right?

Charlie Christian, a true innovator in and music in general. Credited with being the first to play improvised solos with an amplified using single notes to solo much like a saxophone would. He changes the role of guitar from just a rhythm instrument to a soloist. This album with the Bennie Goodman band are recordings from 1939-1942. Christian died in 1942 at age 25 from tuberculosis.

It was Herbie Hancock's 84th birthday a couple of days ago. This article in the U-T covers a lot of ground; a new album with hip-hop artists, AI in music, classical music w/Lang Lang, and more. Fine writing by George Varga.

Dave Holland - Conference of the Birds (1973). Hearing this album back in the 70's was an Ah-Ha moment for me. It was the first time I really understood what Free-Jazz was all about. Such great dialogue between all four members of this quartet. Quite astonishing that a record of such freedom, creativity and virtuosity was Dave Holland's first as a leader at just 24 years of age.

At 86 years old, Charles Lloyd is as vibrant, creative and active as ever. I've seen him several times over the last decade, and his performances are always memorable. Here is a great article about this master.

John McLaughlin has a special place in my heart. A friend dragged me to a Mahavishnu Orchestra concert in 1972 and it was life altering. McLaughlin was my gateway drug to jazz. Picked up the album Apocalypse at a record shop for $3 yesterday. These later iterations of MO were not as good as the original IMO, but the track "Hymn to Him" is a masterpiece of . It's an extended piece of 20 minutes with orchestration. Worth a listen.

Bob Boss (guitar) was not well known outside of the area. He was a top-tier musician that chose to have a low-key career. Happy to play in bars, local events and corporate gigs, he was proud to have raised his family and put his kids through college with those gigs. He had a warm heart and great stories to tell. He mentored many musicians here.

Bob was my good friend. He passed away unexpectedly last night. RIP Bob Boss 1952-2024.

Freedom Jazz Dance is one of the most covered standards and a tune I always enjoy hearing no matter who is playing it. Probably the most famous version is by Miles. I realized that I had never listened to the original by it's composer Eddie Harris on the album The In Sound. Digging this album in its entirety.

The album As We Speak (Béla Fleck/Zakir Hussain/Edgar Meyer) caught my eye after seeing it won a Grammy for Contemporary Instrumental Album (and nominated in another). It's like Shakti, but with a bluegrass twang!

BTW, Nice to see Shakti, This Moment take home the gold for Global Music Album.

A comprehensive list, although I have some disagreements with the rankings. For example, Stan Getz as #4 is way to high; Jackie McLean at should be in the top 5, IMO.

Always admired Branford Marsalis who often lives in the shadow of his younger brother Wynton.

"I didn´t move back (to New Orleans) to do this. I moved back to move back," Marsalis, who has lived for years in Durham, North Carolina, said in an interview with The Associated Press ahead of the formal announcement. "This is the icing on the cake."

@mrcompletely I too have been critical of Wynton for being so steadfast in the narrow focus of pre-1960's jazz. But you can't deny his incredible talents, and for strongly promoting jazz as an art form to a wider audience. Branford is much more of a creative force in developing his own sound and freedom of expression, IMO. Not to mention his incredible chops.

I really like this compilation, Circle in the Round, of previously unreleased recordings from that span 1955-1970. It covers 1st & 2nd quintet, electric Miles, and other ensembles. It has alt versions of some classics, unheard tracks, and a cool cover of CS&N Guinevere. Great cover art, photos and extensive liner notes too.
