OK, super random thought - but what if The Devil's Chord was not originally intended to be the 3rd episode of the season (as there is, per dialogue, a 6-month gap between the end of Space Babies and TDC) but that the season was rearranged after filming to air TDC on the same day as Eurovision?

So, we may, in fact, be seeing the season out of order. It would make some of Ruby's dialogue in TDC make a bit more sense. #DoctorWho

For a bit of Sunday happiness & silliness: tell me about some a book you've recently excitedly told someone about and why!

I've talked about Erin Meyer's "Culture Map" because it opened my eye to a lot of intercultural interactions I have in both, my everyday and my work life.

And about Marcin Wicha's "Things I Didn't Throw Out" because it made me laugh and cry at the same time + made me fall in love with Daunt books because I would not have found out about the book without them.

@Viss @jwz Looking at the aurora hashtag, looks like the European experience bottomed out at around 41N (frustratingly, just north of BCN) and then another, stronger storm hit a couple of hours ago, so the American West got a bit luckier.

As you might know, I have no academic training in computing of any kind. My training was in Mathematics and Theoretical Physics.

It is, therefore, often a surprise when I encounter a CS paper (often a vintage one) and realize just how beautifully it is written and what it expresses.

Reminds me of when NeXT did a big layoff in 1992. They started by firing the person in the mail room. Steve Jobs had to hand address the fedex envelopes with termination notices to impacted NeXT employees who did not work out of headquarters.

I saw that and immediately thought that this was some sort of industry astroturfing to prevent the EU regulating shitty LLMs.

Watching .

Welp.

China's Tencent version is still far superior.

The Netflix version whacks you over the head and yells, "Do you get it?? Do you get it??"

Tencent's version was poetic compared to Netflix's.

There's little nuance, gravitas, depth. Ye Wenjie's character was butchered beyond repair 🥴☠️

That's the most unforgiveable of all.

Does anyone know what's going on with the admin, and who do I talk to?

In not-unrelated news, it may finally be time for me to get off my arse and move to a smaller server. Does anyone have a good guide on how to do that as of early 2024?

array, to Java
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

Back to the basics. I've started another web pet project, this time with . And I mean plain vanilla Java, with no backend or frontend frameworks. I get the utility of those when doing corporate stuff, but for a relatively simple web project, with time on my side? It more than suffices, it will likely be way lighter, and I get to see behind some of the framework's abstractions, so it's another opportunity to learn. :)

kittylyst,
@kittylyst@mastodon.social avatar

@array Ah OK. Don't quote me on this, as it's been ~8 years since I last touched Eclipse IDE - but I think the implementing code for the javax specs you reference will be in the internal com.sun.net.httpserver package - which is what JEP 408 exposes as a properly supported API.

So, for Java 21, you could use those APIs as an alternative - might be a nice counterpoint to doing it in terms of servlets; and it could be seen as even more "bare bones".
