Whoops I didn't let myself cry yesterday cuz I was just too tired.

dyani,
@dyani@social.coop avatar

@CuriousMagpie thank you that's so helpful to hear. I guess I'm concerned that I'm doing grieving wrong, which i know that sounds silly. But I don't want to make anything harder for myself down the line! So i gotta do it "right" (i guess?)

@Elizabeth3

One reason is because saying we "have" autism indicates it's an affliction or disease, like having a cold. And that indicates it's somehow "fixable" or temporary, which is a eugenic thought.

@MsHearthWitch interesting. I think the normal amount of time here is 3 months (at least in Utah). And I think he filed for some kind of expedited thing which is 1 month. I'm tired 😮‍💨

Turned off music and am trying to buckle down for a study session. Can I just say, this new world of often only having a digital option for a textbook, is AWFUL. It's SO bad for neurodivergent folks.

My textbook is only readable in an app. I can't easily take notes from it. I can't make my usual process of tabs and sticky notes. I can't bounce around the book as I reference things.

It's a wildly negative experience for my brain, inspiring so much resistance to learning the material.

dyani,
@dyani@social.coop avatar

@MsHearthWitch @hollie i have been wondering lately how I can embody learning to make it easier for stuff like this. By embody I mean involve my senses in more than one way. Could the answer in this case be listening to the book spoken aloud while you read it with your eyes too? Doing something physical while you read, like playing with clay? Idk! But I think that would create stronger neurological connections in my brain than reading in one dimension.

dyani,
@dyani@social.coop avatar

@MsHearthWitch @hollie ohh i see. yep I struggle with that stuff too. Super difficult for me to create a mental map of the information if I don't have the physical book. I guess what I was referencing was more common for ADHD brains!

dyani,
@dyani@social.coop avatar

@MsHearthWitch @hollie yes! 👏🏻 That fits. Uses multiple senses. Apparently there are studies showing handwriting activates the brain differently than typing or something. And that it's more memorable.

First time body doubling with a friend yesterday and it was so helpful!

We chatted a lot so I'm not sure if it was the connection that helped me feel less overwhelmed with work, or the simple online presence of another human. Not sure if silent body doubling would work on me yet, especially cuz I love chatting with people nowadays to stave off loneliness. Must keep testing.

I foresee Discord succumbing to enshittification and it has me worried about where all the communities on there will go.

dyani,
@dyani@social.coop avatar

@MsHearthWitch :( yeah!

the closest alternatives i can think of are Telegram, Keybase (haven't used it tho), or forums (would need a website i think).

The only good reason to connect appliances to the internet would be so that we never have to manually set the time again.

dyani,
@dyani@social.coop avatar

@cory lol. but there's a radio signal for that! At least in the US anyway.

Aaand right as I was feeling really sad about going back... I got an email from Williams Sonoma that my espresso machine shipped!

YAAAY. I'm so stoked. I got a beautiful olive green one. I can't wait to share pics.

I deliberated for a while. Because it's A Color... and I struggle with like just falling into that white, black, stainless steel modern kitchen look.

Realized tho, that's not the kitchen I want. So I bought my first Colored Appliance Thing. LOL!

dyani,
@dyani@social.coop avatar

@MsHearthWitch omg that sounds pretty! i love olive green, can't wait to see it! I am also realizing I must embrace colorful kitchen for my own happiness levels 🙌🏻

Jupes and I compared our respective task management systems. They, a Physics major with A’s in calculus and chemistry and astronomy (it’s that pulsating noggin) - and also! autistic! - have a system that blows me away in its simplicity. I shared my system (we all cracked up) based entirely on compensating for my ADHD brain by building channels of false urgency - it works at low levels but becomes overwhelming at scale. This morning Jupes taught me their system!! It feels…good! New! Whoah.

dyani,
@dyani@social.coop avatar

@hollie I second what everyone else has commented! Please do share the Jupiter System for all to enjoy!

Found my way into a great discussion on implementing the ability to create private groups, and it startled me how emphatically a few folks were puzzled why this would be desired. One person repeatedly characterized private groups as "hiding from the public square". It feels like issues of harassment (sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, etc.) are talked about with such urgency (at least in my circles?) - I can't be the only hearing that? The public sphere isn't safe for everyone.

dyani,
@dyani@social.coop avatar

@hollie i think humans are wired for small groups! i once read someone's theory that humans cannot really compute properly the large amounts of people and the large groups that the internet has connected us to. We just can't properly wrap our minds around it and still haven't found a way to work with this sudden new change in society and how we live. I can see how that theory could be true! So I agree with you that it's weird that they are not acknowledging privacy and small social connection

So... there's been construction going on outside my vacation rental the entire time. It's not actually been that bad. A handful of moments it's gotten on my nerves, but truly, I have not minded it.

Until today, when the construction meant that they have cut off my access to the elevator and my only access to the main floor is now stairs.

I am, for all intents and purposes, trapped here now.

dyani,

@MsHearthWitch i think stressed-out people in general struggle with this. Anxiety kind of takes the reins and makes us think of the future all the time. REINS oh no am i making horse puns now too? Nooooo

edit: wait did I even spell reins right? i'm looking at the word too much

I started a new crochet doll today.

This one is special. This doll is wearing traditional Ukrainian garb. The rooster from the pattern is the Unbreakable Rooster, a ceramic jug that remained unbroken in a Kyiv apartment during the early days of the invasion. (I do urge you to check out the pattern and read the whole story!)

And ofc starting a rewatch of ACoFaF because REASONS. KP Hob has my heart.
