@NanoRaptor I don’t think an employer is entitled to one’s best, most driven work – but it is the responsibility of teachers to draw that work out. A teacher doesn’t gain more profit from a student showing exceptional work – they get to then help the student refine that kind of work rather than work at the level of checking boxes.

“Tech isn’t political”

The Nazis in tech are, very vocally. That’s why if you have any sort of following in tech on social media you should vocally call them out and use your voice to denounce these absolute garbage people.

Because if you don’t, you’re quietly let them take away what you love.

@thomasfuchs This is wild, and these guys are awful. The one redeeming factor Is they have no idea how bad their ideas are:

> The idea, he said, is to do to San Francisco what Musk did to Twitter.

Me, a month ago: I need a new coffee machine, not a new hobby.

Me now: spends hours a week watching YouTube videos about espresso

ehler,
@ehler@musician.social avatar

@simonbs If you’re wanting to stay on the coffee-but-not-espresso side:

My Moccamaster has brought me great joy and was entirely worth it. I use it almost every day.

For the really special occasions and when I somehow have patience before I’ve had coffee, my Chemex is the best coffee I’ve ever had.

This looks interesting https://indieaisle.com/

Lots of great indie web hosting options appearing at the moment. I love it.

ehler,
@ehler@musician.social avatar

@robb do you know of anyone keeping good lists of options like this? I’m seeing cool things that I might like to try, but failing to note all of them at a reasonable rate.

Decided I’ll probably ship this scanning app in the coming months. TestFlight is up, and incorporated a few more features (like OCR, and file destination), if anyone wants to provide feedback: https://testflight.apple.com/join/5I9XpfUP https://mastodon.social/@agiletortoise/111937557532058347

ehler,
@ehler@musician.social avatar

@agiletortoise my few feature requests (that are likely to already be in your plans):

  • Saved file destination so I don’t have to use the file picker if I don’t want to
  • saved paper sizes (specifically custom ones for odd music sizes like attached image)

Can someone explain why opening a package-type file in BBEdit shows its structure and underlying files, but Sublime Text just shows me hex data? I don’t understand the package file format super well

ehler,
@ehler@musician.social avatar

@mjgardner @bbedit I was looking at a backup from Bear, and I almost never peek on this things in Sublime Text. On Windows would any text editors (or something like 7zip) handle these files at all?

ehler,
@ehler@musician.social avatar

@mjgardner @bbedit Bear’s just a markdown notes app (won a few Apple design awards at one point I think) but stores things in a library format rather than as raw files. I was poking through the backups to see how they were stored and respectably impressed (FWIW each note is a JSON metadata file and the raw md file in a folder in the backup package)

Really sick of "because it's a commercial thing it's automatically bad".

No, things are bad because they're bad, not because of the way someone chose to distribute them.

E.g. There's tons of free software that sucks and there's tons of free software that's great; and the same is true for proprietary software.

ehler,
@ehler@musician.social avatar

@thomasfuchs I understand having a strong preference for free software, but I think too many people who are dogmatic about it fail to understand how people work differently than them, or how entire fields operate.

Periodic toot about my astonishment that a lot of “techies” don’t know that macOS is a true UNIX operating system going back in a direct line to the original UNIX (and BSD). ¯_(ツ)_/¯

ehler,
@ehler@musician.social avatar

@nyquildotorg @thomasfuchs I’m not an older Mac head by any means, but I’ve never seen anyone refer to what we now call “Classic” Mac OS without a space too. But the OS X/macOS era is now longer than the classic era was

@robb Since you were posting about Webmentions recently, any thoughts on this? https://github.com/LewisDaleUK/eleventy-plugin-activity-pub

I'm slowly working to migrate my WP blog to 11ty, but I think the ActivityPub integration of WP is really cool right now and would like not to give that up if I don’t have to.

@marcoarment Something I’ve always wondered: is smart speed shaving off more raw audio at different speed settings? And if so, more at faster settings or more at slow settings?

Obviously it encounters more audio the faster the speed is and makes the settings number go up faster that way, but I’ve always wondered if the algorithms for it take the listening speed into account.

@ivory One feature that I’ve been wishing/thinking about for a bit is to have followed hashtags filtered out of the home timeline and only in their own “list.”

Many of the ones I (want to) follow are high-volume that it drowns out my real timeline, but I’d still like them all saved together in a separate timeline rather than just searching.

czottmann, to random
@czottmann@norden.social avatar

I wish Mastodon's search wasn't so fundamentally broken. 😞

I'd really like to keep an eye on several keywords (not hashtags!) via a full-text search but it just doesn't work, not even on the flagship instance, mastodon.social.

ehler,
@ehler@musician.social avatar

@czottmann I roughly understand why it’s so dire, but it’s probably one of the top two things I wish were different about Mastodon (that is to say, that I still miss about Twitter at its peak)

ehler,
@ehler@musician.social avatar

@czottmann I get that. Other than full-text search, my love of the primary sport I follow (American college football) was birthed and evolved with my Twitter usage, and despite my sincere efforts here, there’s so few people talking about it (or any sports) that I reinstall Twitter for the season and when big stories break.

The Substack drama has revealed to me just how much I love ‘behind the scenes’ looks at people’s projects.

@molly0xfff Hypothetically, if I were okay at googling things but not super knowledgeable: is it all statically generated? Or is there a CMS in that?

ehler,

@robb Neat! As I’m looking at moving from WP to an SSG, I’m curious how to get a nice substitute to their ActivityPub plug-in, and this looks like a good candidate.

@ivory “Save to Readwise” isn’t saving any articles for me, and hasn’t for at least the past day or two. I generated a new API token, but doesn’t seem to have helped.

ehler,

@ivory Any update on this feature? Was a massive time-saver when it worked

ehler,

@ivory sorry, wasn’t aware; “save to readwise” consistently not saving, but also not giving any kind of failure message.
