SwiftData doesn't support models with unique attributes if you sync them with iCloud which really sucks, tbh. Does anyone have a strategy for dealing with this?

fds,
@fds@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs @bigzaphod this is the right answer even if iCloud core data has the same issue with unique constraints.

I’ve pushed ahead with SwiftData on a new app. I think it might be a mistake but realistically I think the app will get released after WWDC so I’m kinda hoping they sort things out or it might be worse trying to undo SwiftData next August. 😅

Adding icons for the .listStyle(.sidebar) looks too strong. Switching to .grouped does not feel great (Shown here with fake data for iteration speed).

The third one is the with icons/sidebar but fontWeight (.light)

I have a slight preference for the sidebar style more, but I am trying to manually tune fonts/colors at this point.

fds,
@fds@mastodon.social avatar

@Migueldeicaza I think I prefer the sidebar one even if the sections look strong. The 3rd one with lighter rights looks nice too, in some ways I prefer it but it feels like I might be more likely to miss section names if I scanned over it quickly.

@halide @macrumors I kinda like that layout style but thinking about my iPhone X and typing on the table, won't that be more wobbly? I guess they just assume everyone uses a case now.

Microsoft Teams is now on visionOS. At this point, it almost feels like Microsoft is supporting this platform with more native productivity apps than Apple 😅

/via https://apps.apple.com/us/app/microsoft-teams/id1113153706

fds,
@fds@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith That is quite nice actually.

I used Teams ages ago (maybe about 5 years ago) and what I disliked was that it was slack reinvented in some ways. Slack has not got better so I'm guessing that actually Teams has probably gotten as good, if not better, but it's popular to hate on MS products so I'll never get to use it other than if a job requires it. My guess is it's as good as it gets for a web app masquerading as a desktop app on macOS.

Mozilla has accused the three major browser makers—Apple, Google, and Microsoft—of sabotaging Firefox.

The company says it launched a new issue tracker where it intends to document the ways in which platforms put Firefox at a disadvantage.

https://blog.mozilla.org/netpolicy/2024/01/19/platform-tilt/

fds,
@fds@mastodon.social avatar

@campuscodi I've used Netscape Navigator and then Firefox. In many ways it's still my favorite despite, at times, it really didn't feel like a mac app. But, the one and only thing that moved me and keeps me on Safari is the content blockers. I know Firefox has ad blockers but I assume they're still a layer on top of browser. If they borrow the content blocker concept, I'd probably move back. They're dependent on money from Google, so I'm guessing that won' t happen.

stroughtonsmith, to random
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

I can already see how the visionOS AirPlay specs news might cause confusion, but I'll remind everybody that visionOS does not support AirPlay for content, only for screen mirroring.

As far as I'm aware, you can't AirPlay videos to TV, and you can't AirPlay music to speakers.

Apple documents this at https://developer.apple.com/documentation/visionos/checking-whether-your-app-is-compatible-with-visionos/

Dialog: AirPlay Not Supported

fds,
@fds@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I can see their logic in that but it is making it a more individual experience despite their other attempts to avoid that. Like I think everyone else is getting at, just because you're using it doesn't mean you don't want to listen to music on your HomePods.

I really want to get an Apple Vision Pro as soon as possible, but I don't think I'll be trying to order today because there are too many unknowns ordering one from outside the US, without actually flying there to get it.

I'm hoping there will be some solution for international developers soon, but I'm not exactly confident in that.

EDIT: He bought one anyway.

fds,
@fds@mastodon.social avatar

@jamesthomson Timing was good in that I’m going to the US soon and I need to get my eyes checked but my appointment is after preorders and I’m in a state with no nearby Apple stores so it’s be a bit tricky. I’m going to hold off too.

Perhaps indicative of a breakdown in developer relations, or just unwilling to blindly prop up a new platform after seeing the power it gave Apple last time round, Netflix has decided to give Apple the finger: want Netflix on your $3,500 movie headset? Use the website.

Negotiating tactic, or are we going to see more of this? I can't imagine a movie headset without Netflix

https://mastodon.social/@markgurman/111773551817039570

fds,
@fds@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith it might be but I do wonder if it’s sort of a Spotify situation where they seem to take forever support a platform where it can’t look the same as other platforms and presumably increases the development cost. That is an assumption by me but the only reason I left Spotify was the lack of Apple TV support for ages.

fds,
@fds@mastodon.social avatar

@dimillian The biggest problem to me is that the average person likely does not care & rather have one App Store. The biggest monopolies are software only companies. Chrome has ~65% marketshare. In theory now Google or someone else) can make an iOS App Store with the view on dominating both platforms. So, how does that benefit customers? How late will the EU be to the party to do something about it?

LLMs are degrading the internet ecosystem in many ways. The biggest is they’ve broken the symbiosis of websites benefiting from content being open to crawling since it leads to search traffic.

The rise in spam for everyone who accepts submissions is also a massive problem. I’d initially thought this would mainly affect social media sites but we now see bug reports, book publishers, etc being overwhelmed as well.

Gargron, to firefox
@Gargron@mastodon.social avatar

is by far the best browser on desktop. Let me be clear, I am not saying that because I am ideologically opposed to using Google products. I use YouTube and Google Workspaces. Chrome genuinely has nothing to offer over Firefox. If your website doesn't work in Firefox then I'm not using your website.

fds,
@fds@mastodon.social avatar

@Gargron I've used it since it was Netscape Navigator. I do primarily use Safari now simply because the content blockers are too good but it's a shame it's gone off the deep end.

I think it's a combination of we let web technologies get out of hand making it near impossible for anyone other than a major corporation to develop a successful browser and most people rely on popular brands rather than quality. Mozilla leadership hasn't help in the past either.

I hope they turn their luck around.

Is Handoff broken in #macOS 14.2.1? I can neither

  • unlock my Mac with my watch
  • send SMS text from Messages
  • trigger Universal Control

Message forwarding worked earlier this morning but also stopped working now.

The Apple watch unlock toggle immediately reset to off when I engage it. Watch is signed in to iCloud.

fds,
@fds@mastodon.social avatar

@finestructure I’ll check when I get back to my Mac but I think unlock with the watch is working. Music worked this morning with the HomePods. Though I did notice some slightly weird behaviour on iPad when having a handoff app open on my Mac. Like it couldn’t decide if it should show the little icon over top the app icon.

fds,

@finestructure Watch unlock worked for me and my handoff icon issue seems to be a one off issue.

Pretty interested in the end of year roundup scores for iPad, because it has not had a great 2023 at all. No new products, no real new features other than the leftovers of last year's iPhone release, and less than what I would say was the minimum effort on addressing the issues with the design and functionality of Stage Manager (which should have been done a year earlier, in 16.2).

Even Final Cut Pro/Logic, which don't support window resizing at all, can't save the score

(‘F’ from me. 2/10)

fds,
@fds@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I love the iPad but it’s kind of feeling like a very expensive way to read comics. It’s definitely been poor year for it but what would have happened? An even faster device that still feels limited by the software. I hope they realized soon it would be better off being more like the Mac wrt to the os but I can see that coming.

Edit: didn’t see your 2nd comment which sums up nicely what I think.

@verge Despite the issue with Meta, I think it's a good thing over all. Enabling the popularity of ActivityPub can be a good thing.

Of course, as soon as something becomes mass market it will become a dumpster fire. The upside, is it does let you block out bad instances. Just as long as big companies don't go ahead and make their own version of ActivityPub to supersede the existing version.

Trying here again... will see... I've been on bluesky a bit lately and I just don't trust their focus or long term goals.

I hate not being able to quote tweet here - yeah I know but I said it.. Need to follow more people as well.

But I will never post or visit Twitter again as long as Musk is involved. "Celebrating" the anniversary of Sandy Hook by bring Jones back is deliberate... on top of white nationalism, transphobia, attacking journalists and institutions etc...

fds,

@codinghorror @chetfaliszek many things in life can be for good or bad. I do agree a lot of people have used quote tweets for bad but a lot have not. You can still link to the post and / or post a pic. I’m not sure how to best do it but it’s better to deter the negative behaviour rather than remove the feature, imo.

I feel I am being stupid but the only strings I can’t seem to localize in my intents are strings returned in a IntentDialog. I've done the following (among many variations) and I just get back English.

// intent swift file
return .result(dialog: IntentDialog("(item) has been saved"))

// standard app localization file
"%@ has been saved = "%@ wurde gespeichert";

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Everything else works so whatever I've done wrong is specific to this scenario.

@MuseumShuffle I know it feels wrong but I can worry about it being the best way later.
