SNP MSP & former Minister Fergus Ewing condemns his own government's Highly Protected Marine Areas consultation document. Suggests Yousaf should either bin it or "use it as a firelighter"...then proceeded to rip up whole document on the chamber floor. I don't think he's happy 👀

I know a lot of people came over to Mastodon with me in November.

Some have since given up on this site - or on social media generally.

Some have gone back to Twitter.

However, I quite like it here - it is a site for nerds and geeks.

And even though I once had near-on a quarter of a million followers on Twitter, the engagement here is generally so much more sensible and grown-up.

felicitymartin,
@felicitymartin@mastodon.scot avatar

@davidallengreen I came over at a similar time and was delighted to find you here. Mastodon has converted me to the idea of open source software and the Fediverse (rather than corporate owned, algorithm-driven social media platforms).

Seriously.

Caveat all you want but this is a sensational poll for Labour and a disaster for
@Thesnp.

Redfield and Wilton subsample .... caveats apply ...

Labour 52%

SNP 26%.

WOW!

felicitymartin,
@felicitymartin@mastodon.scot avatar

@AlexGallagher @Thesnp It looks like a very small sample size in Scotland.

felicitymartin,
@felicitymartin@mastodon.scot avatar

@Thesnp @AlexGallagher @guiltmanager I would argue with that. I’m not a member of the SNP (or any other party), but have voted for them a) for independence b) for their social policies, including free NHS prescriptions and hospital parking, free bus travel for many more than in England, baby boxes, payments for those affected by various cruel Tory policies. They are not perfect by any means, but better than any party tied to UK-wide policies.

felicitymartin,
@felicitymartin@mastodon.scot avatar

@Thesnp @AlexGallagher @guiltmanager The first Scottish Governments, after the Scottish Parliament was established, did some good work, especially on Land Reform. They were following in the footsteps of the sadly lost Donald Dewar. But since losing control they’ve been dominated by leaders that just parrot the line determined by the UK Labour leaders, who have now drifted to the right.

felicitymartin,
@felicitymartin@mastodon.scot avatar

@AlexGallagher @Thesnp @guiltmanager Independence is the only route I see to Scotland ensuring a socially just and more equal future, even if there is some pain in the short term. And with proportional representation and coalition government we would reach more consensus and escape the swing politics of one government blaming and undoing what the last one has done.

May Day green. A lovely walk this morning while the world was fresh. Bathed my face in the dew - not that it’s likely to do much good!

I don't think, to be honest, I could have done the past two days with another person in tow (it's great having a companion for a new route, but quite another thing making them follow you as you search for 'the best' way to recommend to others). One severe drawback, however, is that walking publications always need a proportion of photos with a hiker in them...

felicitymartin,
@felicitymartin@mastodon.scot avatar

@Katiefeatherstone I know just what you mean, both about researching routes (‘wandering’) and photography. Even harder if you save weight and don’t carry a tripod then need to find a suitable rock or post for the camera.

Onward.
We knew we'd be lucky if we saw puffins in mid afternoon, but we went anyway. We didn't see any, but we did see large numbers of kittywake, close up.
EDIT: I'm told these are fulmars

felicitymartin,
@felicitymartin@mastodon.scot avatar

@Ally_SMMiller @withaveeay Fulmars are tubenoses, like albatross. They often glide past you on cliff tops as they ride the air currents. Kittiwakes are more petite and confined to ledges on steep cliffs (or vertical buildings in ports in Scandinavia).

felicitymartin,
@felicitymartin@mastodon.scot avatar

@Ally_SMMiller @withaveeay Yes, fulmar. They often fly past quite close to people, not afraid when they’re on the wing. They’re also famed for regurgitating fishy, oily liquid over anyone threatening their nest. Fortunately I’ve never upset one!

    @withaveeay When I flew it, I timed it at 45 seconds from take off to touch down. Wind allowed us to take off towards Papa and just hang a 90-degree turn to land.

    felicitymartin,
    @felicitymartin@mastodon.scot avatar

    @withaveeay No, it was a great experience. I flew from Kirkwall to Westray to Papay. Before the flight up the pilot turned round and asked whether anyone had any preference as to what route we flew. One of the passengers piped up that she’d told friends on a farm on Eday that she’d be flying over, so he took us over the appropriate part of that island.

    felicitymartin,
    @felicitymartin@mastodon.scot avatar

    @withaveeay This was in 2005 and you could fly to Papa Westray and North Ronaldsay for the same price as the ferry (£12!), because that only served them two or three times a week.

    @nusher Agreed, and I think most independence supporters realise this. But it doesn’t seem to be understood by unionists or English politicians. (I speak as someone who was born and grew up in England and now find that it feels an alien place).

    @theappletree They used to be quite common in April, but we’ve become used to it being generally warmer (like May) in recent years, so 2023 is feeling cold!

    felicitymartin,

    @Snoweider Why couldn’t the aurora have flared up like this over the past few brilliantly clear days? It usually seems to wait until the cloud rolls in. Mind you, we have about an inch of clear sky on the northern horizon (showing west of Ben Chonzie) at the moment, but that’s pale pink post sunset.
