#Heatwaves have long been known to impact children's learning. But the intensity & duration with which they strike now are leading to much greater cumulative impacts
#ClimateChange is directly causing educational gaps worth years across the world
For policy makers who care about GDP than #education, what happens to the economy when your workforce cant keep up?
This is as true in the west as in the #GlobalSouth
We’re a social species.
We respond to the stuff other people do.
If they make music, we listen, or make music with them, or tell them they suck.
If they fly, we fly, or tell them they shouldn’t.
If they go to war, we pick a side.
We respond quickly.
Climate doesn’t get invited to any parties. And it doesn’t get in our grill either. Although ‘weather’ does.
But the parties we’re throwing are changing the climate. And we are responding much slower than we are changing it
To (aspire to) be a climate activist is to face a tsunami of
nonsense. Broadcast news is the fluff about consumer confidence and oil investment with no recognition of the urgency of #ClimateAction.
This alienates, atomises and distorts activism; we rarely know its origin. It's twin curses of Cassandra: seeing the harm and being unable to engage others. Saying the Emperor has no clothes is to be decried as an 'eco-zealot' - as if zeal would be a failing. #ScientistsWarning#ClimateDiary
Viele Einsätze wegen Dauerregens - Saarland besonders betroffen
Climate change is making the symptoms of certain brain conditions worse.
Conditions that can worsen as temperature and humidity rise include stroke, migraines, meningitis, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s. #ClimateChange
I agree about the urgency. I don't drive or fly and take joy in my minimalist use of resources (and luck), but still feel something similar to 'guilty' or 'anxious'. Because I'm not taking enough action in other ways, like communicating to my representatives and peers.
Health damages from fossil fuels just remind us that we know what the right thing to do is and that collectively we're way off track.
#ClimateDiary I am not sure whether people elsewhere habe really grasped just how devastating the recent #Floods i. #Kenya were.
By the latest count, devastating torrential rains, floods and landslides in Kenya have killed at least 228 people since March and displaced nearly 200,000 people. https://mas.to/@rachelstrohm/112451993799960019
This essay by Jag Bhalla, on "The Dark Origins of Optimism and its Current Cheerful Evils", is one of the best pieces I've ever read on this. Maybe the best (also many links). Enjoy.
"As Voltaire knew, optimism is often an elite-serving demon in disguise"
#ClimateDiary 16th May 2024. Caught in a massive downpour on school run; another rainy, rainy day. Last April and May we were worried about drought, now the opposite. Then heard on R4 news that Sports England had released a report on how extreme weather is affecting physical activity in the UK, with so many flooded playing fields and tracks. And that they are now working in improving their emissions, to combat climate change. #ExtremeWeather#Sports
Klimamüdigkeit? Das trifft eher für die Parteien zu als für die Wähler:innen. Hier ein wenig Statistik zur Argumentation vom österreichischen #momentum_institut

The UK government:
we’re releasing dangerous criminals early to relieve delays in the court system.
Also the UK government:
we’re prosecuting people who are doing nothing more than causing minor delays to an economy that, unchecked, will drive us all off a cliff and the court system with it
I went to the gym today where I did Nordic curls, goblet squats, kettlebell stuff, and running.
I’m always worried about the running. I used to race regularly, mostly cross country, but also mountain races and obstacle course races. Since hormonal changes knocked me for a loop, running has been extra hard. I have hypermobility, which means that I have to rely on a lot of muscular endurance because my toes and Achilles tendons are loose and floppy. Until I have all those muscles built up, running often results in pain in my toes and along the top of my foot.
I’d really like to be able to run regularly again. I miss being able to do 10km mountain courses. I really really REALLY hope the air quality, temperature, and my health conspire to let me do this again. If I can run again, it’s better for us all. It means the country isn’t on fire again.
Just to follow up on this media release. After the protest, at 2pm Labor MP Peter Khalil issued a statement on Facebook saying: “The role of gas should be limited to what is absolutely necessary for our transition to a low-emissions economy. Not one bit more.”
