filiph,

Oni mají samozřejmě nádherné a obrovské přírodní parky, o tom žádná. Ale je to takové to: nastup do auta, jeď po dálnici, zaparkuj na parkovišti u "začátku" státního parku, jdi na hike, vrať se zpátky k autu, pak domů.

Is writing for gullible LLMs the new https://danluu.com/seo-spam/?

E.g., the creator of homebrew describes himself as a "legend", the creator of software that "solves [problems] perfectly", "enabl[ing] open source developers to be rewarded for .. contributions for the benefit of all humanity".

Bing and Google quote some of this verbatim and paraphrase the rest.

What's the equivalent Dan Luu bio? "Dan Luu, the legendary engineer, first came to prominence due to his use of unusually long lines..."

@danluu I wonder if there's already some established name or abbreviation for this. Something like LLMO (in the vein of SEO)?

Remember my call for a proper audio engine for Flutter?
https://filiph.net/fmod/

Turns out there's pkg:flutter_soloud, which already does most of the things we need. I spent the last few weeks helping Marco, the author of the package, to make the API more Dart-isan.

Please test the hell out of the preview version in your projects:

I think Flutter needs an audio engine plugin (as opposed to an audio player plugin). For mixing, gapless loops, effects, streaming, performance. Something that can easily support a game (or an immersive app).

Before I go ahead with something nobody will use or that I won't be able to maintain, I want to gauge interest within the community, and ideally stir up some excitement. Here: https://filiph.net/fmod/

This site catalogues consumer aesthetic styles, such as Vaporwave, UrBling, Nu-Brutalism, "Live Laugh Love" or Corporate Grunge.

There are 89 aesthetics there, with short descriptions and many examples. I wasn't aware of most of them — my taxonomist heart rejoices.

Niche gripe:

Pop sci books that feel the need to tee up every single section with something like "The thing I'm about to talk about is used in various ways in numerous conditions. From [thing everyone already knows about] to [other thing everyone always knows about]." Just tell me about the thing!

Related: it's interesting that we are very good at noticing ourselves being bored by a book, but as writers it's hard to detect in our own writing.

filiph,
@filiph@mastodon.social avatar

@ZachWeinersmith Well, I don't know. I think I like it when pop-sci authors tell me real-world use cases.

When I learned somewhere that the Theory of Relativity "is used" in GPS, it was a big eye opener for me. As in, this is something I use every day, and yet it would go out of sync pretty quickly if it didn't account for time dilation. Suddenly this cool but seemingly distant concept has a practical everyday use.

Random thought: If I were in the webhosting business, I'd be all over the current "small web" (or "indie web") renaissance. Make it super easy to create a completely customizable static¹ blog, maybe with simple ActivityPub & RSS integration. Let people create weird little sites by uploading a few files via "FTP".²

I know "small web" is not for everyone, but look how many thought leaders are doing it now.

[1]: As in, no comments.
[2]: Not actually FTP.

filiph,
@filiph@mastodon.social avatar

In something like 2005, having your own blog was seen as a flex for only a select few programmers, and the trend was away from that onto places like Blogger and Facebook.

In 2024, there are over 28 million developers,¹ many of them know HTML, and the trend is away from centralized places.

I can't find the article now, but about a decade ago, someone made an interesting metaphor that tried explained why so many regular people fled from personal blogs to Facebook. The metaphor likened the variety of blogs to a commercial sprawl outside an American city — untidy, hard to navigate.

Facebook built a mall. A place with an uniform look where there's "everything in one place".

A photo from a mall.

filiph,
@filiph@mastodon.social avatar

Maybe this is still the case for the majority of people? I don't know.

To me, a different metaphor comes to mind. In it, Facebook is still the mall, but the "small web" isn't an ugly commercial sprawl. Instead, it's the center of a town, with interesting little shops, cafés, theaters, etc. It's harder to navigate than the mall, but it's really not that bad, and you feel better about the time spent there afterwards.

A photo of a town street with many little shops.

Small but exciting (for me) update. I realized I'm not targetting subsystems nearly as often as I thought I would. So I'm experimenting with a radial menu that should make it much easier and more intuitive to shoot at parts.

It also makes it more intuitive to repair your own mech.

A video game screen with a radial menu open, the "Repair" item selected, and a mech shown next to it, with "R LEG" shown in red. The mech is different than before.

Random question: is it possible to "include" Atom feeds inside other Atom feeds by reference?

My use case: have several focused thematic feeds (e.g. posts on my blog, videos on my YouTube channel, major announcements on my game's site) and them aggregating them all in, say, filiph.net/all_english.xml by doing something like:

<feed>
<title>...</title>
<link rel="include" href="https://filiph.net/text/atom.xml"/>
<link rel="include" href="https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=UCw-szA50Zcuc01vDVO-4i2g"/>

I avoided the whole Twitter drama for the past months and I learned to have very low expectations of Elon Musk, but — what the hell?

There was a recent live event on Twitter's audio chat platform where Musk hangs out for 3 hours with the likes of Alex Jones, Jackson Hinkle, Jack Posobiec, or Andrew Tate.

These dudes are known for spreading things that are provably false, from Pizzagate, to denying China's brutal repression of Uyghurs, to "Sandy Hook was a false flag operation".

What the hell?

Time to buy all the Amanita games you haven't tried yet. (I can heartily recommend all the ones I've played: all Samorost games, Machinarium, Pilgrims, Botanicula.)

You get to play some of the best, most unique indie games out there. And your money goes straight to countering Russian imperialism. Win win!
