What happens, when you join two paths in a #programming language when the second one is an absolute one?

join("foo", "/bar")
returns "foo/bar" or "/bar"?

The wonderful @meisterluk wrote a great article about that you might want to read: https://lukas-prokop.at/articles/2024-05-03-filepath-join-behavior

I can not tell what version I'd actually prefer. There are situations where both versions would be "proper".

Thinking about submitting a talk or two to Fluttercon USA. Company would like me to talk about mobile observability, but I kinda also want to talk about Dart embedding. Curious if Fluttercon is a good fit for that....

I've been in a bit of a developer rut. It's not lack of projects I want to do and can work on. It's more like analysis paralysis on some, death by a thousand cuts aversion on others. So I piss away time on social media. I decided to try to get some dev momentum by picking up something I first tried back in 2020 the last time I got dev writers block: The Ray Tracing Challenge. Back then it was Kotlin and I only got as far as basic ray projection before wrestling with the Cucumber test system and "real work" derailed me. This time I'm going to be trying it in Dart and Flutter. My progress, or lack thereof, will be in this repository with a corresponding plain text developer log.

everyone’s talking about the python layoffs but the and layoffs seem to have flown under the radar. from a mobile dev perspective they are more concerning regarding google’s commitment to its supposedly first class cross platform development ecosystem

Remember my call for a proper audio engine for Flutter?

Turns out there's pkg:flutter_soloud, which already does most of the things we need. I spent the last few weeks helping Marco, the author of the package, to make the API more Dart-isan.

Please test the hell out of the preview version in your projects:

Hello 👋

Four years ago we created https://makealinux.app/ to encourage new developers to build applications for .

Reception to the initiative was great, but now the site is in dire need of a spring clean, and new coat of electronic paint! 🖌️

We've started a fresh repository (link in bio) to build the new site. Do stop by, and take a look. It's all a little empty, but we're working on it!

If you'd like to help, we'd welcome contributions! 🙏

I made it and it went better than expected.

I have a single-node setup with various services in containers and a VM. For example, https://blog.randomplace.online/ is hosted there. I needed a build machine to build a work project, so I decided to spin up a new VM.

I got 10 minutes of build time and my server didn't die during the build. You can see the CPU load of two builds. There is plenty compute power left to serve my blog for that one visitor per month. Also, the Home Assistant VM was not affected.

Need to mention that the node is an PN41 with 4-core Celeron N5100 and 16GB of RAM.

I seriously don't get how a popular distro as don't have or on its repositories.

This is why I don't use distros without a user repository.

People get pedantic insulting users, but truth is you can find anything on (arch user repository)

Anything that doesn't exist on the oficial repos, users can upload it and maintain it.

I had trouble getting a VerticalDivider to show up in a toolbar. It's because the Row didn't have any explicit height. There are two solutions: wrap it in a SizedBox, or wrap the row in an IntrinsicHeight. The latter can have performance penalties deep in the widget tree.

I recently posted a lot about using code generation with build_runner for productive and development. Now that I am working on an in-depth article on this topic, I'd like to ask for your input. What questions do you have or what particular aspects do you struggle with? Let me know in the comments!

In the meantime, I thought I’d gather 5️⃣ useful resources I previously shared about code generation in a single thread below.
