I wish sites would stop reporting that Apple's new Game Porting Toolkit will let people run Windows games on the Mac. It's very specifically tailored to game developers, to help them understand where they need to focus development and optimization.

The underlying translation layer technology that enables it work is not new. It's been on the Mac almost since Apple made the Intel transition more than a decade and a half ago.

What's new here is Apple's decision to embrace and extend it.

Why is it that we keep blaming our kids' depression and anxiety on social media and smartphones instead of the fact that we've turned the entire planet into a burning dumpster fire for them to deal with

Ruminations on mobile gaming, a 🧵

I spend some leisure time playing Star Trek Fleet Command from Scopely. It's a free-to-play mobile game that, in typical fashion, is heavily gated with pay-to-win mechanisms to let players advance.

As a minnow - someone who spends very little to play - I'm always flabbergasted when I talk to the whales, or those members of my alliance who think nothing of dropping hundreds of dollars at a time to gain a level or advance ship or building construction.

The new Mac Pro is hilariously overpowered, unnecessary and ridiculous. I want one. Absolutely no justification for it, mind. I just want one.

@craiggrannell This reinforces everything we've been saying about Apple and games for decades. It'll never change.

Never mind Marathon, where is the Myth reboot?

On second thought, given how far away this Marathon looks from the first series, probably a better idea to let sleeping dogs lie.

The Lower Decks crossover episode of was an even bigger treat than I expected. Basically an hour of unadulterated fan service.

I hope there's a special place in Hell for the people who make Applicant Tracking Systems. They're all basically methods of psychological torture with user interfaces designed by sociopaths.

It is possible to simultaneously believe that Apple is too parsimonious with RAM and that some of the people complaining about how much RAM the new Macs come with don't understand fuck-all about how it works.

“Foundation” vs “Dune”

Isaac Asimov: we’re headed for some bleak imperialist nonsense but humanity’s salvation will come from using math we haven’t discovered yet

Frank Herbert: we’re headed for some bleak imperialist nonsense but humanity’s salvation will come from tripping on drugs we haven’t discovered yet

If you don't agree with me that Johnny Dangerously is one of the most underrated comedies of the 1980s, we can never truly be friends.

This place is just filled today with so many absolute shit takes and pathetically, desperately naïve comments about Apple and Jon Stewart parting company.

I don't understand people like Dianne Feinstein and Mitch McConnell who would rather literally decompose in front of cameras than simply enjoy their remaining years with some semblance of dignity away from public life.

I understand that the 2024 Atari is a cynical cash-in on Gen X video game nostalgia, but then they do stuff like this and it gets me excited.

Personal note: I broke my leg last week. A spiral fracture of the tibia (shinbone) and fibula (calfbone) and a broken ankle too. An orthopedic surgeon put the leg back together and I've been resting at home since Friday.

This is the first time in my life I've broken a long bone (fractured a toe or two along the way, but that's been about it). Not an experience I care to repeat, ever.

This is a pretty damning indictment of the current state of The Intercept, a publication which has done some very admirable work over the past decade.

I'm a bit tired of reading "the Vision Pro is priced too high" from tech pundits who know better that it's an early adopter device and priced that way for a reason.

Please give us your scintillating wisdom and insight beyond "this product isn't targeted at the mass consumer market."
