Two thrilling walks over the weekend. First was over Hart Fell near and along the narrowest ridge line I’ve followed. Yesterday was Grey Mare’s Tail, then around the horseshoe above it.

Fun fact: Grey Mare’s Tail is so called because the drive from Edinburgh is an absolute ‘mare.

The dramatic landforms near Hart Fell. Partly cloudy but bright.

@Wen @alexlac51 despite the fact I don’t swim it still looked really inviting!

An old Jewish man went to Buckingham Palace to collect his well-deserved knighthood. His head was full of things he wanted to ask the King, but when he knelt to receive his honour, his mind went totally blank. He struggled for words until he said the only thing that he could think of:

‘Mah nishtanah halaylah hazeh’

The King, looking puzzled, turned to one of his courtiers and asked

‘Why is this Knight different from all other Knights?’

Very interested to hear two students talking about in a meeting recently. Both agreed that they had grown up in a world where sharing their personal information was the currency of life, they didn’t give it a thought, and struggled to understand why older folk are reluctant to do it.

We go to great lengths to comply with rules but it turns out lots of the subjects of that data aren’t just uninterested in privacy, they don’t even think it’s an option for them.

Desktop is going away in March, not August as previously advertised. We have a migration plan but it’s nowhere near ready. Ouch.

A bit of red paint. Such bravery from some racist twat who is doubtless now giggling with his mates about how he has single-handedly shown the what’s what. Well done mate. In other news, continues to happen.

As if we needed another reason to go back to Edinburgh. A new bakery that looks gorgeous has opened in the beautiful neighborhood of Stockbridge. Attention, @dianemagras and other lovers of Scotland. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/30/t-magazine/lannan-bakery-edinburgh-scotland.html?unlocked_article_code=1.EE0.b8ST.njfXQIAGLUFo&smid=url-share

There are important issues other than

Not every problem can be solved by independence

No matter your views on independence, needs progressive and competent governance

flup,
@flup@mastodon.scot avatar

@CloudyMrs we have to find it from somewhere! Indy is not imminent and the work of government needs to continue in the meantime.

flup,
@flup@mastodon.scot avatar

@simon_brooke I don’t agree or disagree with this. I just think it’s important to address the problems in front of us, inasmuch as that is possible, and not let them languish while we wait an indefinite period hoping Indy happens one day.

@flup@mastodon.scot avatar

The thing about human rights is that, if you once recognised them as universal and essential, they will at some point become deeply inconvenient. This is a good thing.

If you ever feel that human rights are getting in the way, please reflect on their strength and potency, and why we once thought of them as inviolable.

Then think—really think—about what you’re trying to do and why it’s incompatible with a universal set of human rights. Let them guide you into the light.

My #jobhunting tip of the day: check the metadata of documents you send. I've seen Word-format CVs where the author is someone completely different -- or, in one example, an obscene joke name. File -> Info is your friend.

Today, we're announcing Proton CAPTCHA, the world’s first CAPTCHA with built-in censorship-resistant technologies to prevent bot and spam attacks.

We needed a tool that tells the difference between humans and automated bots, but also a CAPTCHA option that meets the high security and privacy standards you expect from us.

This is only the beginning. You can expect more innovation in this space.
