Anyone else out there have any direct experience with the issue of masking for around infants?

My niece is about to turn 1. Her moms are pretty covid conscious compared to most people in their area, but say that kiddo gets unhappy with she can't see their faces, for example when sitting in a shopping cart. So they often don't wear masks in stores or, alas, on an airplane.

Has anyone else navigated this?

@drclareharris @riotmuffin @donkeyherder
I think putting a rain cover over the stroller would be enough to mitigate airborne transmission for the occupant of said stroller. Some people have put a portable air purifier under that cover to add another layer of protection.
1yr-olds are sometimes just grumpy for whatever reason, such as the fact that they don't want to be where you've taken them. It has nothing to do with what you look like or whether they can see your face.
airplane: 😬

Here's something on various ways of modifying a stroller with a PAPR: https://engrxiv.org/preprint/view/2455/4720
If mine were still that small I would:

  1. add a CR-box to the stroller and cover the stroller with a rain cover.
  2. not travel by plane. I didn't fly with them before they could reliably sit in their own seat.
  3. practice wearing a respirator with them. PPE comes in child sizes now.
  4. I'd consider this (image)

ooooh! now all it needs is the teddy bear ears.

HEPA filters catch 99.95% of particles. |es use MERV13 filters which catch more than 90%. Ikea devices use EPA12 filters which catch 99.5% of particles.
If the DIY aspect of a CR-box or a PC-fan-filter box is off-putting to you; if you want a nice looking air purifier; if you want something with affordable replacement filters: IKEA has got your back. A Uppåtvind device costs €35, a replacement filter €5.
(I know IKEA are problematic in other ways.)

"Was machen Sie richtig, was alle anderen falsch machen?"

Looking at this again(from 2022):
End-to-end system for rapid and sensitive early-detection of SARS-CoV-2 for resource-poor and field-test environments using a $51 lab-in-a-backpack
https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0259886#sec002

I don't know if I am smart or organized enough to make it (or get the components). But I think it would be better than using RATs to test family members, guests, neighbors.

Does anyone know whether buying the reagents would be difficult / put me on a watchlist?

I need to get my iPhone serviced, but it's my only phone. What do people do in this situation?

Do they give you a loaner, or do I need to get a cheap burner phone or something like that?

I don't want to be without a phone for days.

[Update: I have lots of good advice in the comments. Thank you!]

fritzoids,
@fritzoids@mas.to avatar

@grammargirl , maybe a friend or neighbor could loan you an old phone? If they are willing to just revert it to factory settings no sensitive data will be seen by you. Then just stick your SIM card into the loaned phone until you get yours back.

Please help me out with something.

The oven in your kitchen: does it stick out an inch or two, or is it flush with surrounding cabinetry?

(I don’t mean the handle, knobs, or door of the oven. I’m talking about the body of the oven itself.)

fritzoids,

Flush.
Kitchen, including oven, from IKEA. Installed it ourselves. (I think the oven might be a re-branded one from Whirlpool.)

@MatWright @DenisCOVIDinfoguy @auscovid19 , great thing is, several Länder (individual states in the Federal Republic) are still on summer holidays or have just returned to school last week. The country-wide rise is despite schools closed for summer.
Waste-water numbers for Bavaria can be found here: https://www.bay-voc.lmu.de/abwassermonitoring
If you click on Nürnberg, e.g., you will see that the amount of virus in waste water has been rising despite schools closing on July 28th and not set to resume until 12. Sep.

So how are y'all dealing with the gaslighting that comes from people who think that everything is normal and Covid isn't a thing anymore? Are we going to have to deal with this gaslighting bullshit forever?

fritzoids,
@fritzoids@mas.to avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi , I handed out FFP2 respirators to family members who seemed receptive to the necessity of masking in certain settings (airport e.g.), at least.
Those who seem unwilling or have stated their unwillingness to mask are just going to have to find out on their own. I am done (for now) explaining that their newly acquired ailments and exacerbated chronic illnesses might be tied to their past Covid infection.

Reminder that you should absolutely never use the website called “sci-hub dot st” to get free access to research papers instead of feeding the greed of for-profit publishers.

That’s basically communism, which is of course illegal. 👩🏻‍🏫

fritzoids,
@fritzoids@mas.to avatar

@esther , you should also never ever write to those who originally wrote those papers asking them whether they would send you a copy. They might actually do so with great delight at finding out how much others want to read their stuff and it might go to their heads. We can't have any of that.

we are not smoking, and we aren't drinking in front of the kids...

...but maybe we should reign in our coffee consume in front of them.

fritzoids,
@fritzoids@mas.to avatar

@kyonshi , out of curiosity: how much coffee are we talking about here?

my reason for having the occasional beer or glass of wine with a meal in front of the kids is to model behaviour that shows that you can stop at one just like you can stop at one glass of lemonade or one handful of gummy bears.

fritzoids,
@fritzoids@mas.to avatar

@kyonshi , I'm guessing that is for 2 adults. So one pot (3 mugs?) per person per day. Do you find that excessive? Have you considered a placebo to take its place (rooibos, e.g.)?
Also: have you thought about what you drink the coffee for and finding an alternative for that particular need?

Toddler before bedtime

“I will tell my brain not to make me grumpy when I wake up in the morning”

Toddler lying on floor in midst of late afternoon tantrum

“My brain is telling me I need to whinge!”

He’s technically correct, but would this stand up in a court of law?

fritzoids,

@PieterPeach , learning to human is so exhausting.
Learning that feelings come and go is so hard because it doesn't always feel like they will go away again.

I forget which movie or book this quote is from but: "individuals are smart; people are stupid."

Don't blame the tourists. They're waiting for a signal from authorities. Blame the airlines still flying their planes to these places. Blame governments for not grounding those planes and saying "don't go there / don't come here".
Geez. It's the whole "why do we need mask mandates?" debate again.
