I've never thought drinking raw (unpasteurized) milk was worth the risk, although many people disagree. With H5N1 virus (bird flu) showing up in milk in some US herds, that risk has increased.

Dr. #BarbPetersen, a dairy #veterinarian in #Amarillo, #Texas, had been caring for sick cows for several weeks in March when she and a colleague finally pinned down the cause of the illness among the herd: the #H5N1 strain of the #BirdFlu.

It was the first time the #virus had been detected in #cattle.

During that same time, she said, dairy workers also fell ill. #US

Bovine Veterinarian: A Message to the Ag Industry about H5N1

"Veterinarians such as Dr. Barb Petersen in Texas have been dealing with the virus in their clients’ dairy herds since at least March.

"It has been circulating here as early as February, based on retrospective feedback from owners and fellow veterinarians," says Petersen, owner of Sunrise Veterinary Service in Amarillo. ..."

Widespread human infection with H5N1, if you believe this veterinarian!

Article:

"Her advice? “Protect yourselves and your people on the dairy. There's been underreporting of the virus. Understandably, there's been a lot of fear. But every dairy that I've worked with has – with the exception of one – had sick human beings at the same time they had sick cows.”

...

Petersen says she has worked with people infected by H5N1 who do not interact with dairy cows. “I'm talking owners and feeders who don't usually touch cows,” she says.

Experts are warning that a dengue fever outbreak in Latin America and the Caribbean could grow after 4.7 million people have already been infected this year, a higher number of cases than in all of 2023. The disease has exploded due to heavy precipitation from El Niño and climate change creating conditions in which mosquitoes that carry the virus thrive. PBS News has more about the disease and how to keep yourself safe.

Just kidding. I was trying to see how destructive this can be. It keeps spamming new windows that are always on top until your computer freezes, and it overrides any quit signal like ALT+F4 so you can't get rid of it. Neat, huh?

We love the quirky humour in our public toilet so much that we haven't yet removed the festival decorations. It has a double effect: people use sanitiser more often. And laughter is known to help our staff cope. Of course, the knitting virus doesn't have spikes, it's fluffy.
The only problem is that people spend longer in the toilet. And we need knitting instructions now, people ask for them so often. @knitting

Texted my hairdresser to advise her I’ve had a cold all week but it’s not Covid (three negative tests in three days) and does she want to reschedule. She said yes because in the last three weeks she’s had influenza A, recovered, relapsed and is still on the way to recovery. Give people a choice before you risk their health. It’s the civilised thing to do.
