“Companies need to move really fast, even if that includes skipping a few steps along the way. The user experience will just have to catch up.”

This is absolutely insane and shows what contempt at a deep level so many in the tech industry have for the people who have to use what they make

ghorwood,
@ghorwood@mastodon.social avatar

@grmpyprogrammer and the whole “first to market wins” mantra isn’t even true. if it were, we’d all be using friendster, vine and, uh, gobots.

i blogged about mysql's json functions for all the people who think putting large blobs of schemaless data into their relational databases is a good idea.

ghorwood,
@ghorwood@mastodon.social avatar

@niclake @grmpyprogrammer i have a client with a business model that relies very heavily on reams of json from Other Places and it's been... not bad. the performance has been significantly better than i thought it would be and the only really annoying part has been that 'where in' situation. i hate that part.

@robsonfletcher 1. you don't need to be 'culturally linux' (ie. a nerd) to use linux.
you can use linux without making it part of your identity. there's no need to use the command line or tinker with it. anyone who says there is is stuck in 1998.

ghorwood,
@ghorwood@mastodon.social avatar

@robsonfletcher 5. things will be different but, also, kinda the same.
the applications you use to do regular tasks will be different. they will be similar enough to be familiar, but the difference does mean there is a learning curve.

ghorwood,
@ghorwood@mastodon.social avatar

@bamboombibbitybop @robsonfletcher thirded on pop_os. it's my daily driver.

however, any of the popular distros will do the trick. honestly.

"using linux is difficult. i think it would be simpler for me, a lone consumer in a mid-sized city, to bend the corporate behemoth that is microsoft to my will" is an absolutely wild take.

ghorwood,
@ghorwood@mastodon.social avatar

@meejah @bamboombibbitybop you can spend a lot of money at system76, if you want.

also, pop is my recommended distro in general. it's slick and the "i have an nvidia card" iso solution to graphics drivers is pretty damn great.

look, i’m obviously one of those crusty, old command-line-first linux guys, but hear me out: you don’t need to be “culturally linux” to use linux. you can just install it and use it and not make it part of your identity.

any of those distros people talk about will work fine, great even, right out of the box: popos, mint, fedora, elementary, zorin. it doesn’t really matter.

ghorwood,
@ghorwood@mastodon.social avatar

all those things the nerds dogpile into the comments section to argue about? they don’t really matter. we’re enthusiasts and we argue because we’re enthusiastic. that’s all. ignore us.

ghorwood,
@ghorwood@mastodon.social avatar

@literarypug is it? i mean, i'm a cli guy through and through, but if people are happy and productive pushing a mouse around the parking lot, that's fine. both interfaces have their advantages and drawbacks, and while i have a distinct preference, that doesn't imply that it is objectively good.

everyone is falling all over themselves about all this new whale language research and how maybe whales have words. but, my people, we've known prairie dogs have a language -- verbs and nouns, even adjectives -- for fifteen years and no one has ever cared.

I am (unfortunately) on a Macintosh. A program is segfaulting, and I need to run in a debugger to find out why. I run lldb executable-name, and then "run". It prints:

error: the platform is not currently connected.

I do not know what this means. Googling for this error message turns up various things involving iOS and XCode, but I am not using either of those things, I am using lldb at the command line.

What should I do?

@mcc this sounds like the ending to an episode of 'murder, she wrote' that i would actually watch.

and today at&t is bribing the friends of public officials to get out of providing landlines.
