He’s a long-time technology journalist, who contributes regularly to Macworld and TidBITS and writes books in the Take Control Books series. The greatest gift you can give to your children is not to leave a ton of stuff for them to sort out when you die.

@flargh My secret goal is to end life with a single banker's box and then be decomposed inside it.

@GraniteGeek @flargh I probably didn't need those things anyway, then! I can wear one shirt for the rest of my life!

@pentney Oh, ChatGPT v12 will already own all property in the world by then.

@davidhmccoy Won't you already have sold all of them to send them through college?!

The second greatest gift is to say (and maybe put in writing), “Feel free to give away, recycle, and trash everything.” Some parents and grandparents of people I know bequeathed mental complexes about discarding stuff, too.

@juneussell We have a lot of fine china, as my wife had a number of relatives without children and she was deemed most worthy. But it's just sitting in a cabinet. Pretty! But we rarely use any of it, and usually use the more sentimental cheaper stuff from there anyway!

glennf,

@siegel @flargh Does it involve the world's largest Kitchenaid?

@fahrni @flargh Well, you got caught.

@DukeDuke Our neighbors across the alley had health and dementia problems. Their daughter moved them into health facilities. When they passed, she sold the house like that to a developer whose sister did estate sales! The sister pulled out all the good stuff for sale and donation, and the development had a guy in a back hoe implode the house with the rest of the goods in it. And thence to the dump.

On the second night of Jeopardy Masters (last night), a category was “____ of the _____.” This was next to “Biblical Places.” I can’t recall the clue, but it had a Christian aspect.

I blurted, “flesh of the Leviathan!”

My family lost it. We all laughed for minutes. I explained the Leviathan’s place (briefly) in Jewish tradition and mythology.

The correct answer: “salt of the earth.”

@circideas It gets really complicated when you read about the differences between the Kahain priestly cast and the Levites, and their roles.

As part of my 2023 resolutions, made late, no more Substack subscriptions. The founders enable hate speech and misinformation, particularly about vaccination and trans people, and generally lack the kind of moral compass required to run a platform that has mass reach.

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@circideas Ghost? It's very unfortunate that Substack is/was an effective platform. Though I am hearing from all over that subscription renewals and new susbscriptions are way down. I am seeing this in book sales and other measures, too: people going back into the office in ever larger numbers means some of the new "reliable" things of the last three years were pandemic idle time based.

@stevelieber I will never get over: removes wetsuit, he's got a dress underneath, removes dress, he's got a wetsuit underneath. As a writer, was that in the script or is that the result of incredible resonance with the artist?

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@stevelieber Well, I’ll give him that. That whole scene was a chef’s kiss. Really enjoyed that collection I bought direct from the author!

I would not be surprised if Stranger Things 5 also has Jenna Ortega as a previously unknown daughter of Winona Ryder. https://www.polygon.com/23718229/beetlejuice-2-release-date-cast-jenna-ortega

"Over time, Apple gave a different set of false information about upcoming products to various employees suspected of being the source of leaks” https://www.macworld.com/article/1816449/leaker-analyst941-twitter-busted-apple-sting-operation.html

Back in the Gassée days, Apple seeded different code names to different siloed groups within the company to track leaks. Generally, companies can figure out leaks through siloing.

How do I know that Apple fact? An employee at the time leaked it to me!

I’m watching the Jeopardy Masters and can’t fathom why they’re revealing the daily doubles. It’s always fun to discover it along with contestants, knowing ahead of time doesn’t add any excitement, it removes it.

Also, I couldn’t even remember where they are located when I watched a reveal.

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@mathowie My wife pointed out the way they’re revealing them is very hard to see, too.
