: Much of the news from the Gaza Strip have come from local journalists, as regional and international journalists have been barred by Israel from independently entering the enclave. Their reporting has come at a historically high cost. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) states that at least 95 journalists have been killed since the start of the war (90 Palestinian), making it “the deadliest period for journalists since CPJ began gathering data in 1992.”
Israel’s killing of journalists in this war opens a new dark page for the unpunished and free targeting of journalists in the region… This is a war crime, as journalists are granted the same protection as civilians under international humanitarian law.
The killing of several reporters through drone and sniper fire strengthens this claim… Journalist families are not safe either.

Turning an ethnostate into a genocidal pariah on the international stage takes effort from believers: Israel apologists will always have excuses and justifications for every horrible thing that comes out about what Israel is doing in Gaza. There is no testimony, investigative report, statistic or raw video clip that could come out showing horrific criminality on the part of the IDF or the Israeli state that would cause Israel supporters to go “Oh okay now this one really is bad, Israel needs to hold those responsible to account and make some dramatic systemic changes to make sure it never happens again.”

This has forced port operators to adapt to altered schedules. For the Red Sea port of Eilat, Israel, the disruption has been much more severe: its operator is laying off half of its workforce because of a sharp drop in business.

The Israeli army executed 140 Palestinians and detained hundreds for interrogations, transferring at least 160 of them to Israel.

y: This dynamic, which leaves antisemitism on the far right to metastasize unchecked, has only intensified since Oct. 7. Many of the flashpoints over Palestine have been sites of ruling-class power purportedly charged with reproducing a multiracial meritocratic elite: electoral politics, government bureaucracy, corporations, nonprofits, the arts, journalism, and above all higher education. And it is predictable that after Palestinians themselves, those punished for speaking out on Palestine in these spaces are often Black.

How horrific is US policy: “The extensive use of torture against Palestinians taken prisoner by the Israeli military in Gaza, including 21 Unrwa staff members.
They're torturing people who work for the UN. Can you imagine what they're doing to Palestinians?
Let's get into some of the specifics. Practices recorded by Unrwa include the use of a nail gun on prisoners' knees, sexual abuse against both men and women, and the insertion of what appears to be an electrified metal stick into Palestinian prisoners' rectums. They were beating me with an extendable metal bar.
There was blood on my trousers, and when they saw it, they beat me there. Day 161 of the Gaza Genocide. And it's like the situation continues to turn into more and more of a caricature of itself.”

’s words that he would “no longer be complicit” highlight one of the often overlooked aspects of the military: it’s never the rich and powerful behind the guns. They create an armed body of working-class men and women to fight and die for them instead.
We are constantly fed the idea that joining the military is honourable or that enlistment entails great fun and travel. For most enlistees, though, the military is sold as a way to get out of poverty.

My sister Lubna was planning to film a video and they sang for me. The camera failed to record anything.
Make it stop

Looking back, it might have been a portent.
Maybe the camera refused to record memories that would soon be unrepeatable.
Maybe the Titanic was doomed to go under.
Maybe.
What I know is that this year, there was no birthday celebration.
There is no university to go to. Israel’s genocidal military machine destroyed it.
There is no Capital Mall. Israel’s indiscriminate bombing leveled it.
There is no Titanic Restaurant or al-Farra Tower. Israel’s unhinged military reduced it to rubble.
Many of my friends have been killed. I don’t know exactly how many, because it is almost impossible to stay in touch with anyone…
Every second, I either lose a loved one or a dream.

Oldie but goldie, from Oct 5 2023, : This hypocrisy perfectly mirrors the long-standing response of affluent, and powerful, Western nations to the Palestinian tragedy. The very same nations who preach peace but subsidise Apartheid in Palestine are also professing their commitment to mitigating climate change, but (alongside the likes of China, Russia and India) helping global CO2 emissions reach historic highs. Indeed, the lofty promises of “climate justice” from Western nations have regrettably proven as hollow as those about “Palestinian justice”. In both cases, these states talked the talk but refused to walk the walk, leaving poor and vulnerable communities to bear the brunt of their excesses and hypocrisy.

: in both cases, they devised and implemented inadequate and counterproductive mechanisms to appear to be “helping”. On climate change, they came up with deceptive concepts like “carbon offset” and “carbon credit” to evade meaningful action and a just, swift transition to renewable energy. On Palestine, they devised unworkable “peace plans” that only serve to deepen Palestinian oppression, while Israel made supposed attempts to “improve” Palestinian life under occupation instead of addressing the fundamental issue of occupation itself, as it must.

Equally cynical is Israel’s routine attempts to confiscate Palestinian lands under the pretext of “environmental conservation”. This tactic, known as “green colonialism”

And by identifying the ruling class as the perpetrators of this, was identifying that we live in a class society with a ruling class that is very small, that has all the money, that makes all the decisions, who are the ones, the small group of people who actually gain from the Gaza genocide, whereas the rest of us in the other class, the working class, are the ones who not only pay from it, but suffer from it and have so much in common with those in Palestine who are being killed when we don't have anything in common with people who are in the ruling class.”

“Meron’s legal findings (on Article 49 of the 4th Geneva Convention) did not derail Eshkol; in fact, they gave him a way forward. In his memo, Meron had indicated that law permits temporary encampments established by the occupying power to meet a pressing military need. Therefore, should Israel choose to build a civilian settlement, Meron advised, it should be built “in the framework of camps and [should be], on the face of it, of a temporary rather than permanent nature.” 5 Heeding Meron’s advice, Eshkol instructed the army to establish paramilitary outposts, to create the veneer of temporality. When settlers arrived in the West Bank at the end of September, the government publicly referred to them as soldiers despite their civilian status. 6”

Israel does not make that distinction because it considers Hamas an organized armed group and not an embryonic sovereign. This raises at least two troubling issues. First, because Israel rejects Hamas’s legitimate political standing, it categorizes all of its members, regardless of political or military function, as civilians who directly participate in hostilities. Two, even Palestinians in Gaza who are not members of Hamas are at risk because, as the governing authority in the territory, Hamas employs the public sector. This includes law enforcement officers who may have no military purpose and no affiliation to Hamas beyond employment. Israel’s revised military doctrine, which has no regard for Hamas’s sovereignty claims, risks rendering nearly any Palestinian participation in the public sector in Gaza as presumptively continuous. Therefore, Israel can justify targeting these individuals militarily regardless of the actual threat they pose. Page 265
