This is anecdotal, but I now personally know two employees of -related companies whose valuations have imploded within the past month, and they are now looking to bail. One company lost 73% of their (publicly traded) value in a month. The other one is a startup whose founder (according to my friend) has “finally snapped”, and the company is now in freefall.

It feels like the bubble is bursting right now.

@drahardja What do you think is causing it? It looks like some were very speculative prototypes without the ability to deliver. (Devin is a prime example.) I also see a similar situation to Instagram being acquired and the investors behind other photo apps realizing they could not compete and backing out. Right now it looks like the big players have sucked up nearly all of the oxygen and the limits we’ve known about LLM/GenAI have not been overcome as quickly as the overly optimistic people said would happen. I can see why a lot of investors have decided the party is over.

Another aspect is that I think many are finding the tasks they want to use with AI can be done on a computer without the cloud which makes the massive investments in cloud infra terrible waste of money and resources. That calculation must be happening in some startups.

@drahardja That makes sense. There are definitely many examples of bad outcomes and they get a lot of attention. The NYC chat bot which gives city residents incorrect guidance on laws and policies is just another big one which shows a use case where it is very weak. Trying to force this solution into known bad use cases should stop.

At lunch someone pointed out how there were many accidents and injuries when cars first hit the streets a century ago. Then regulations and road signs were developed to control traffic and create safe walkways for pedestrians. AI needs similar treatment.

Either way I am ready for a shakedown.

Biden finally admits that bombs supplied by the US have been used by Israel to kill civilians. Tanks have already been shelling civilians who are in tents with no way to defend themselves.

@LALegault @DeliaChristina Biden says one thing for PR and still supplies Israel as quietly as possible. I expect this is just another PR play to buy time and appear to not be as willing to kill civilians as Netanyahu. Turkey and other countries have been putting so much pressure on them to agree to the ceasefire. Netanyahu keeps sabotaging it so he can keep killing.

All eyes on Rafah! Israel has started the attack on the last city in Gaza. It is filled with over a million people who have no way out. Yesterday Israel confiscated all of Al Jazeera’s equipment and banned the news organization as this invasion was about to start. Videos are coming out showing buildings have been bombed like has been done for months. So many will be killed tonight.

I agree that Governor Noem's killing of her dog was savage, and her defiance against our judgment is telling. But what if it had been a pig? We have a mixed up moral code about which animals are OK to slaughter, and when.

@danielpunkass A big part of it for me is she chose to share this story in a book meant to show voters who she is as potential VP candidate. So she clearly makes decisions poorly.

Today is a rainy day in SF. As I was waking I thought I heard rain drops, so I asked, “Alexa, is it raining?” I was expecting the usual stock weather response that I’ve been getting for years. This time Alexa simply replied, “Yes, it is raining.”

This is a first. Next I want to see how much Alexa is able to adapt to unique requests. I could ask, “Alexa, will I need an umbrella tonight?” This would requiring connecting me to my location and umbrella to rain along with time of day. The stock response has just used the address set with my Echo device and responded with the forecast for the whole day. Connecting these dots from a spoken request would truly be a big step forward.

@scott It’s important to share the bike lane. Fewer cars the better in my book. I want to see bike lanes widened and expanded as much as possible.

Lately as I commute on the Caltrain I am seeing grown men in suits on scooters. It still makes me think how this would have been unthinkable 10 years ago. These men in suits would have felt social pressure to always drive their cars and pollute the air.

@pixelscience There should also be a term for sending PRs to teammates you know will approve while avoiding other who would deny it. I worked with someone who would push through changes late at night which undid the hard works others just did.
