The Panji Tales

The Panji Tales are a cycle of Javanese stories, centred around the legendary prince of the same name from East Java, Indonesia. The main story of Panji tells of the romance between Prince Panji and Princess Kirana; and Panji's search for his long lost bride. Read more in English Wikipedia article.

Adaptations of these stories are found across Southeast Asia in several languages, not only in Indonesia but also in Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Myanmar.

A Malay edition of the story is available from Indonesian Education Ministry site, titled Hikayat Panji Kuda Semirang. I haven't found more modern adaptation to bahasa Indonesia, if any.

Okay the quick count numbers are in for presidential election. Seems we will get a war criminal and human right violator as the president. But this is not yet the whole story, because the numbers for the legislature (DPR/DPD) won't be known for some time. It is still likely main Prabowo supporting parties (Gerindra, etc) won't get outright majority. This is what happened with Jokowi in his first period.

Jokowi managed to consolidate his support in the parliament after initial difficulties, but Prabowo isn't exactly Jokowi. I am not really sure Prabowo can be as persuasive as the outgoing president.

The online hate campaign turning Indonesians against Rohingya refugees

Ann Mayman, UNHCR’s representative in Indonesia, says social media posts related to Rohingya were appearing “on multiple platforms, with similar messages and it was professionally [made] content. It was not made in a fisherman’s hut on a beach in Aceh. This was professionally-made and there were a lot of bots involved.” Posts often portray Rohingya as ungrateful, a drain on resources and a danger to local people.

Why Indonesians don't speak any Dutch today:

In many subtle ways they make us feel their dislike. "I am a European, you are a Javanese," they seem to say, or "I am the master, you the governed." Not once, but many times, they speak to us in broken Malay; although they know very well that we understand the Dutch language. It would be a matter of indifference to me in what language they addressed us, if the tone were only polite. Not long ago, a Raden Ajoe was talking to a gentleman, and impulsively she said, "Sir, excuse me, but may I make a friendly request, please, speak to me in your own language. I understand and speak Malay very well, but alas, only high Malay. I do not understand this passer-Malay." How our gentleman hung his head!

Why do many Hollanders find it unpleasant to converse with us in their own language? Oh yes, now I understand; Dutch is too beautiful to be spoken by a brown mouth.

Anyway, Indonesian has a lot of Dutch loanwords, and so does Javanese. In case of "kelar" it also exists in Indonesian. However, these two languages sometimes borrow differently.

E.g. "pit" (bicycles) from Dutch "fiets" is commonly "sepeda" (from French "velocipede") in Indonesian ("kereta angin" is less common).

"Sepur" (train) in Javanese from Dutch "spoor" (railway tracks) is "kereta api" in Indonesian. "Sepur" in Indonesian retains the original meaning of railway tracks.
