  1. Life sims evolved in a different direction with the rise of farming & crafting life sims (Stardew Valley, Valheim, even Skyrim survival mode)

  1. There is still a lot of unexplored alternative takes that can be done on the "sims-like" genre! For example:

  • return to simple times: Tiny Life emulating The Sims 1

  • better content distribution & monetization: The Sims 3 with all DLCs is about $350, never goes on a sale beyond -50%, maybe a Paradox-style DLC subscription pass would work well here?

  • change the theme: The Sims in space (Space Colony, 2003), Sims but cute animals instead of humans, Sims but 1st person etc.

  • community was always the pillar of the game, can you serve it better than The Sims? Steam Workshop integration could go a long way
  1. it is certainly an issue with project scale & player expectations; competing with EA & The Sims 4 directly is a David vs Goliath scenario, mainstream players will expect on par quality (or better).

Niches however is something indies excel at. Targeting core players with Steam Workshop, retro nostalgia, co-op multiplayer, being a spiritual successor.

    @happyborg curious because I used to be angry with Firefox taking similar direction to Chrome but currently very happy with it and experience it provides. No crashes or slowness here at all. You do you though.
