@Deus is the argument that someone else should do all the work for porting data from Windows to Linux for free because one refuses to spend enough to buy a spare drive for their own critical data? I don't see why anyone would want to solve it even if it was somehow feasible 🤷‍♂️

harshad,
@harshad@sharma.io avatar

@Deus and please don't do this to yourself if it isn't a hypothetical we're discussing: get a spare drive for backups, save up, borrow, take emi, whatever it takes. Because I've lost data to this attitude, and losing a decade of your photos (as I did) isn't worth the money saved by not having a second copy.

harshad,
@harshad@sharma.io avatar

@Deus then you're free to continue using whichever OS suits you! Nobody is forcing anyone to use Linux. It's what those who care enough about their own privacy tend to choose and recommend, with the cost and efforts included.

Heh, I would recommend FreeBSD, it's better for long term commitment, but it has an even higher barrier to entry, which is being worked on by the community on their own time and expense, it'll take a while.

harshad,
@harshad@sharma.io avatar

@Deus that's awesome, keep tinkering until you're comfortable to commit. If/when you feel like it, folks will be willing to help figure out last mile issues.

I find arguments of "but it's still not good enough" tiring, and it reeks of entitlement. I've seen brilliant people burn out after decades of work and yet those sitting on the fence keep demanding more with no mention of supporting ones doing the work. That's where I'm coming from.

harshad,
@harshad@sharma.io avatar

@Deus I hope you understand that I'm interested in tackling that argument, this isn't about you or me.

Left these bananas to ripen on the plant because the squirrel I rescued as a wee furless baby two years ago (who is back to being untamed as an adult) loves them. Took my share today 😬

harshad,
@harshad@sharma.io avatar

This video is from several days after rescuing, with a little fur grown on its back.

My mother was visiting at the time and we both took turns changing the hot water bottle and feeding every 3 hours until the bbsqrl had fur on its tummy (indication that it could now self-regulate body temperature).

The squirrel was quite comfortable indoors while growing up

So we ran a smol squirrel bootcamp to get it used to living in the trees later 😬

I now have over 10,000 videos on my primary Favorites playlists on . When you exceed 5000 videos on a playlist, YouTube unhelpfully just says "Something went wrong." At which point a few minutes ago I created 0-Favorites 3 (many of you will already know why I have the "0-" on there). If you think 10,000 videos is a lot, keep in mind those are just my main Favorites. My YouTube History of all videos watched is, uh, somewhat longer. Yeah.

harshad,
@harshad@sharma.io avatar

@lauren similarly I have "watch later 2" because I have exceeded the limits on default list 😂

And it's some work to remove each video that I've watched from those lists, so there will be a third soon.

harshad,
@harshad@sharma.io avatar

@lauren nods I love the infinite scroll feature where once an action is taken on a video, you get to scroll down all the way from top of the list and find the spot to continue pruning /s

@lauren sigh, billions of dollars with the company, PhDs on payroll and this is what we get 😆

(I'm guessing we're the edge case by using the app to curate videos instead of just consuming what the algorithm suggests immediately, not worthy of effort to fix)

Since last update of @tailscale on Android (11), it shows as connected with exit node enabled and yet the VPN is not actually working. Cannot reach any other nodes and all traffic is going through ISPs IPs, not the exit node as the app says.

Joined beta program, the app kept crashing. Uninstalled and reinstalled the beta version, same issue as before: claims to be enabled, does nothing.

Sigh.

Screenshot of Tailscale app stuck at "Starting" with Android 's pop-up saying Tailscale isn't responding.

Sunny morning after many days!

harshad,
@harshad@sharma.io avatar

Now it's noon, cloudy and likely going to rain. And I am headed to town for a grocery run.

harshad,
@harshad@sharma.io avatar

Those clouds weren't playing. It's pouring at the moment. I'll wait until it clears up a bit, which seems likely in next half an hour looking at the clouds.

I'm ready, the motorcycle is ready, just waiting out the rain. It'll probably catch me on the way, but that's alright.

harshad,
@harshad@sharma.io avatar

The rain did pause after half an hour, rode out in full rain gear to discover the next hill was sunny and dry, no rain at all!

Sweltered in the multiple layers until halfway to town (~30 minutes) and then it got overcast and started drizzling again.

On the way back i enjoyed a beautiful misty evening. Bummer that I thought it's going to be raining throughout and didn't carry my action camera 🤦‍♂️

POV shot from motorcycle saddle, headlights are diffusing in the mist. An old dead tree stands alone in fields a little ahead.

The benefit of live A/B testing and continuous integration and deployment seeping into every team is that on any given day you as the user will encounter software that's broken in novel ways, and you'll never get good at any user interface. Tools that you depend on to get shit done keep shapeshifting? Praise the A/B CI/CD baby!

When you're not sure what you're experiencing is mid life crisis or midwife crisis 😬 New baby cow didn't have milk for several hours, finally fed her mum's milk with a bottle.

She loves to cuddle already, and dozed off on my lap. Now indoors because it's getting cold with the evening.

It's cute to have a few hours old calf following you around the house, until you realise your several cats have the disadvantage of mass when knocking things over.

Fed the hungry baby again at 2:30 am, guess I can sleep for a while.
