Thing are going to become more dangerous as the federal criminal case over illegal retention of government records and obstruction of justice by proceeds. Having read the indictment carefully twice now, the evidence against him seems very compelling. The charges carry lengthy prison sentences. Cornered, Trump’s incentives are to incite chaos and violence in the guise of campaigning for the Republican nomination for president. 1/

heidilifeldman,
@heidilifeldman@mastodon.social avatar

The emerging approach from other Republican contenders will exacerbate the danger. They are all talking about the “weaponization” of , rhetoric that feeds the nutty conspiracy theorists’ paranoia. At the same time, they are pointedly not assuring of a pardon if any of them becomes president. This will feed his desperation to return to that office. 2/

heidilifeldman,
@heidilifeldman@mastodon.social avatar

Kevin McCarthy, Jim Jordan, Josh Hawley, et al are also contributing to the danger by repeatedly attributing the federal to Biden, when they know full well that a special prosecutor like operates independently of the White House and, to a close extent, independently of the Attorney General. 3/

For at least eight years, the country has been in a cold civil war, with one side committed to rule of law and constitutional democracy and the other committed to maintaining and reintroducing a particular brand of white Christian patriarchy, via a power grab if necessary. Now, more than ever, we must stand absolutely firm against that side, despite the agitation from Trump and other Republicans. 4/

:
Case is about national security.
DoJ committed to rule of law, one law for everybody.
Indictment follows from law and facts, as determined by a grand jury of U.S. citizens resident in Florida.
Trump innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
DoJ seeks a speedy trial.
Smith personally thanks the FBI. 2/

As an experiment, I've done a brief review/overview of the Toot! app for iPhone/iPad:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/toot-for-iphone-ipad/

Would you want me to do more of these overviews for other Fediverse apps? If so, is this format okay?

I've tried to keep the review brief and readable for people who are scrolling through lots of app overviews at once.

@feditips I use Toot! and I thought your capsule review was accurate and helpful. In general, I would welcome capsule reviews of apps from somebody who knows the fediverse.

I remember how craven Republican electeds were when they hopped on the Trump presidential bandwagon in 2016. It appears they are now trying to outdo themselves as they chest thump and lie in reaction to tonight’s news of Trump’s indictment on federal criminal charges. The Republican Party has no regard for rule of law, legal process, or really any of the basic principles of U.S. constitutional democracy. It is not a legitimate political party, hasn’t been for years.

More of us should be paying attention to Ron DeSantis’s use of “cultural Marxism,” an antisemitic trope, during his presidential launch speech yesterday. This is no different than a major politician casually incorporating any other hateful, racist slur into a prepared speech. It is dangerous and reprehensible. (For those unfamiliar with the term, see https://www.salon.com/2019/05/05/a-users-guide-to-cultural-marxism-anti-semitic-conspiracy-theory-reloaded/.)

So, both of the two leading contenders for the Republican Party nomination to be the next President of the United States condone violent, illegal, and unconstitutional efforts to keep an election loser in the White House. The Republican Party is not a political party. It is a criminal organization. 2/

heidilifeldman,
@heidilifeldman@mastodon.social avatar

That criminal organization controls one chamber of the U.S. legislature. It controlled appointment of the majority of the current judges on the U.S. high court. It controls numerous state legislatures and state executive positions. Throughout the country we are living in subjection to a criminal organization. 3/

heidilifeldman,
@heidilifeldman@mastodon.social avatar

This is a different, more insidious kind of injustice than being subjected to outright authoritarianism. The Republican Party wears the trappings of lawful government but has corrupted it to serve criminal ends: the perpetuation of the Republican Party’s power without regard to election law or constitutional requirements. 4/4

I've been clinging to a futile hope that

(a) Mastodon would automatically start to feel natural to me; or

(b) A magical new alternative would appear; or

(c) Twitter would stop its death-spiral into fascism.

Since it's clear none of those are happening, I'm finally going to bite the bullet and leave the Hellsite and commit to posting only here.

Friends, I would love help with rebuilding my network and getting the "feel" of Mastodon. <3
