I don't follow much, but every time I see Sam Allardyce, I mistake him for Viktor Orbán, and I'm left wondering why is the Prime Minister of Hungary now managing Leeds United?

@janmon Great photos, and I really like the map, always really helpful for me when people write about anything travel related.

SmartHome is when you vacuum decides when it’s time to leave.

It just started vacuuming ignoring that I’m still at home. Turns out that HomeKit thought that I left when I only moved between rooms 🤦🏼‍♂️😂

@flohgro I feel there should be an a basic level below which is something like "not as smart as it thinks it is" home; but a snappier name.

Just been reminded of this article:

https://pudding.cool/2018/08/pockets/

This is why women go nuts for . Why can't we just have functional pockets? WE WANT THEM

No woman has ever been happy about weird mini-pockets or fake pockets.

Article by @thepudding

@sarajw @robb The killer thing with the pockets is, when men where skirt-like clothes, e.g. the sulu in Fiji, they have pockets in them! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulu_(skirt) for reasons completely beyond my understanding the does not want women to have pockets.

    @SpaceGeek Well thanks, now instead of doing anything useful with my evening, I've been trying different fonts in instead.

    hl,
    @hl@social.lol avatar

    @SpaceGeek Oh I'm not as far as picking one yet, all I've done so far is completely rewrite how my config file deals with fonts, in anticipation of trying them out 😅 But I have to admit I've been eyeing up https://dharmatype.com/calling-code which @jbaty bought to my attention the other day.

    A carton of milk sprung a small leak on the way home, so I had to pour it into a glass carafe/vase before putting it into the fridge. Now, when I need milk, I pour it out a glass carafe. I imagine this is how it feels to be royalty.

    I need a better way to deal with all the things I want to read, like learning to ignore 90% of it. Just tried to clear my #RSS feeds, and saved about 10 articles to 'read later' as they all looked good, but then I'm probably never going to get the chance to read them later, and should stop pretending to myself. It'd hopefully make me feel less guilty about not reading the cool stuff.

    hl,
    @hl@social.lol avatar

    @tonymottaz Thanks. As you can imagine, I've been meaning to read his book. I think it is a mindset change that I need to somehow do. Already with some things I've accepted I just don't have time to do them, but things like "oh it's just a short article" are harder to put aside, as individually they don't take any time at all

    I often wonder why companies don't pay more in order to hire more productive employees.

    The local Costco has checkout folks who can scan and bag items 2x-5x faster than I get at local grocery stores even when I only have a relatively small number of items, and they do a better job at packing items in to not damage them, are friendlier, etc.

    Because almost no one tries to pay for better employees, the market isn't competitive and these people don't cost 2x let alone 5x.

    hl, (edited )
    @hl@social.lol avatar

    @filippo @danluu I think this is the key issue, identifying those whom it's worth paying more is very hard, especially in a larger organisation with; different managers, HR policies, office politics etc. and how would you compare across functions? How do you compare a 5x engineer to a 2x sales person in terms of salary?

    Meanwhile there's a security guard here who radiates the entirely opposite vibe. I've never talked to him in person, but I see him on the internal mailing list all the time.

    He's a nature photographer. He treks all over the area hiding in bushes and standing in water, etc and has all these amazing and sometimes hilarious pictures of foxes and owls and eagles and things.

    He posts them in the mailing list and also offers them for sale.

    My specialist skill is avoiding doing one thing, by instead doing something very close to it, but not it. Case in point: I'm meant to be practicing guitar chords, but instead I've decided to write up my random collection of lesson notes in an easier to edit way: So I'm busy learning , Lilypond https://lilypond.org and creating chord diagrams as SVGs in Inkscape instead of just playing some 7th chords.

    hl,

    @maique Best of luck. A couple people I know quit, not easy. What helped them was keeping track of the money they didn't spend on cigarettes. At the end of the first year (and later years) they treated themselves to something of the equivalent value - which always ended up being much bigger than they expected.

    Why are people busy developing " " that can spam the internet with half truths at massive scale, and not one that will: sort the dirty laundry, put it into the washing machine, then hang it, iron if needed, and put it in the correct place in the cupboard, all for 0.50€ in compute costs? Priorities people.

    hl,
    @hl@social.lol avatar

    @CandaceRobbAuthor Not even if we give it a misspelt, easily trademarked and slightly illicit sounding name like "laundrr"?

    hl,
    @hl@social.lol avatar

    @CandaceRobbAuthor If AI could tell me where all the odd socks go, then how about "repAIred"? It'd be a LLM (Large Laundry Model) of course. I think that name alone is worth $5m in series A funding.

    I think that is great, and being able to use my preferred formatting for posts awesome, but I have to admit, the combined markdown for links is perhaps a /little/ over the top e.g.: [[{{< relRef other-page-name >}}][Link Text]]
    I almost feel sorry for the round brackets who somehow weren't invited to this bracket fest, but perhaps the round brackets were already occupied keeping my running.

    hl,
    @hl@social.lol avatar

    @jbaty In most cases I'm happier using the org-mode version, Markdown mode is fine, but I'm forever forgetting which is link and which is text for URLs. The biggest annoyance with the org-mode conversion I have, and I'm pretty sure it's the same limitation in , is that tags can't have spaces in them, as in the front matter they're delimited with spaces, an issue the the MD version doesn't have.
