I don't admire Mike Johnson: he has terrible, regressive views, and given the power, he would make our country tremendously worse for most people who don't look like him and believe what he believes.

But, given his awful approach to the world, I am impressed that he has pursued necessary bipartisan action that approaches statespersonlike behavior in preventing government shutdown, deters Russian expansionism, and counters dysfunction.

hoadlck,

@glennf Yes, it is odd how the Speaker meeting such a low bar is given so much regard. I mean, things like aid to important countries and keeping the government funded should be so straightforward. And when he finally lets it advance he is hailed as a good leader? Our standards have sunk so low they might strike magma...😁

We just released the last 2.10 stable version: GIMP 2.10.38. It features very cool improvements for graphics tablet 🖵🖌 support on Windows! 🥳

hoadlck,

@GIMP Sheesh! I saw "last stable version" and thought that you were closing things down. But, you just meant last version before 3.x... Whew!

Let’s take a deeper look at the “Cat video from Space” that was beamed down on Dec 11.
It was sent using laser optics from the NASA Psyche spacecraft as part of Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) technology demo.
Distance to Psyche: 31 mil km; 0.2 AU; 101 light seconds; 80x distance to the moon
Video length: 15 sec
Data rate: 267 Mbps 😲
Video quality: UltraHD (4K or 8K?)
Compressed video rate: Probably 20-50 Mbps
The download probably took just a few seconds.

hoadlck,

@AkaSci It is obvious (now that you mention it) that one needs a telescope for receiving laser comms. Of course, I never realized it until now.

Any idea what the long term plans for reception are as more spacecraft start using this system? Will they design a purpose-built set of telescopes for receiving these? Something optimized for the task? Is there the potential for even better performance with such a telescope?

Thanks so much for your interesting posts!

Do your children or goods inheritors a huge favor. Recycle, shred, and otherwise sort all your old paperwork. My mother-in-law, rest her soul, retained seemingly every piece of paper across 50+ years of her personal and professional life. I can see why: most of it was useful for a few months to even a decade later. But then 100% pointless for her or anyone else. There's a huge effort to go in and process that…so she didn't. Now her children have put in ~100s of hours in processing it.

hoadlck,

@bxknits @glennf For some reason I cannot quite understand, I have saved every receipt for all of my adult life. I have them stored in separate expandable folders for every year, with internal slots for each month. There have been a few times that it has been useful to refer back to one, but the ink has faded on many of them.

I cannot make myself throw the old ones out...if there are some advancements in scanning technologies in the future, this could be invaluable data for someone's PHD!

Shu is so photogenic. I had to encourage him to get in the sunbeam, but he was all for it after he got there.

Fluffy brown/grey/white cat with long whiskers face up into a sunbeam.

Speak for yourself, BBC. I knew crypto was a load of old tulips from the start. Ergo, I knew SBF was just a dodgy salesman.

Everyone got duped by Sam Bankman-Fried's big gamble

When I first heard about BitCoin, I was excited about the concept. But, as soon as I heard that there were people investing in it, I realized that it was all speculation and should stay far away.

Researchers using the JWST recently detected the heavy element tellurium in the ejecta of two colliding neutron stars whose cataclysmic merger was detected in March this year by several observatories.

Neutron star mergers create gamma-ray bursts, gravitational waves and many elements with large atomic weights.

In the spectral data below, a distinct peak can be seen in the region of the spectrum associated with tellurium.

Very interesting! I never thought about rarity being influenced by planet formation. But, it makes sense.

Also noticed this point from the Wikipedia article...

> In the gold rush of 1893, miners in Kalgoorlie discarded a pyritic material as they searched for pure gold, and it was used to fill in potholes and build sidewalks. In 1896, that tailing was discovered to be calaverite, a telluride of gold, and it sparked a second gold rush that included mining the streets.

Woo hoo!

I just backed The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation (by @pluralistic) on Kickstarter https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/doctorow/the-internet-con-how-to-seize-the-means-of-computation?ref=thanks-toot

I also changed the ref on the Kickstarter social media link from "thanks-tweet" to "thanks-toot"...Kickstarter should have a Mastodon link share.
