Well, officially in the market for a Slack replacement now. Hit me. What are you personally happy with in a small business setting, strong macOS/iOS support, user friendly, including nontechnical folks?

@janl shameless plug, but Signal Groups are pretty solid!

Level 13 of !

I'm about to get my first burned items (radicals from Level 1), so technically I should be around the peak of number things that I need to keep in short term memory at the same time! With that in mind, I had what I think of as, a "restructuring" week. A lot of kanji/vocabulary has similar pronunciation so had to slow down to 10 new lessons per day and make a lot of mistakes, but all to get a more solid picture of kanjis!

Level 32 of !

The highlight of this level comes from yesterday where I learned the word “子孫” ("descendant") and immediately encountered it in 鬼滅の刃 (Demon Slayer manga). This goes to show how useful studying kanji has been for me!

I made tons of mistakes this run, but lots of my guru stuff moved to master/enlightened. Let's see how it changes at level 33!

For the grammar I'm very excited to finally burn some items there! It still takes effort to read anything, but less than before!

My friend in the Portugal is still seeking employment, but now is unfortunately on the brink of having his family become homeless. They have been looking for work for few months now and have lost two contracts in a row that were supposed to keep them afloat.

It isn't easy time for anyone, but if you could donate even a bit to his gofundme campaign - it well help a lot:

@ubik ah, that might make all the difference. Forwarded! Thank you!

Remember that blog post "I got robbed of my first kernel contribution" where a maintainer slightly rewrote a patch and took credit for it? Well, I decided to do something about it.

I co-authored a guide with Maria Matějka and some other folks on documenting how your project gives credit and otherwise handles contributions. If your project's policy is to lightly rewrite contributions and take credit for them, say so! Subscriber link (free) to the LWN article:

A company uses one of my libraries, and they often open issues about bugs and other help. I promptly offered them a support contract, which would greatly help them and myself. They refuse.

After a while they open a bug about a production issue. What would you do?

indutny,
@indutny@fosstodon.org avatar

@niklaskorz @mcollina yeah, I'd offer them guidance about how they could approach fixing it and submitting a PR. Even if they won't support your work, they might at least try to support the code they use?

It is always such a pleasure to interact with Electron's maintainers. Thank you so much @keeleyhammond for fast-tracking my PR: https://github.com/electron/electron/commit/f2af35182c9a7b13a7047992cb330652c15cec69 . Electron is literally the only project lately that can review and merge PR in a single day!

I have a friend in EU, who is in a particularly tough spot in their life and is searching for either permanent or contract UI/UX design work.

If you are looking for a designer, or know someone who might be interested - please send me a DM!

Thank you!

I love how the Category Theory textbook that I’m reading pulls somewhat advanced concepts from adjacent fields as examples with little to no introduction at all, and later draws on them and puts them in the exercises.

indutny,
@indutny@fosstodon.org avatar

@natevw I’m going for a bit more in depth self study, but previously read https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/joy-of-abstraction/00D9AFD3046A406CB85D1AFF5450E657 which inspired me to study Category Theory in the first place!

Watched the 2018 movie "Shoplifters" (「万引き家族
」) yesterday evening ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoplifters_(film) ). What a delight! Might be my new favorite Hirokazu Kore-eda movie, although "Monster" was terrific as well.

The exploration of family relationship through property rights and shoplifting is deeply connected to the title, but becomes obvious only in retrospect. The movie came out one year before "Parasite" and their themes feel connected, even if the outcome is entirely different.

10/10!
