@jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net

I write a bunch of code (mainly Python), have cats, tinker with and detail cars, and fiddle with FreeBSD. I like taking (making?) photos. Playing with Internet stuff since '96. Interested in kernels, protocols, and inner workings in general. Intermittent cyclist. Cloudy Amazonian, and they tell me my opinions are my own.

@davidallengreen sent a link to this article to my mum and am now having to explain Mastodon (in general) to answer, “how did you find that article?”

EE data SIM cancelled; backup internet is powered by an @aaisp SIM \o/

Need to figure out routing the cable for the external antenna so it can mount outside, the signal inside is a bit weak.

jamesoff,
@jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net avatar

@danieldurrans because I can :)

jamesoff,
@jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net avatar

@danieldurrans see https://jamesoff.net/tweets/jamesoff/status/1329432661685919748/ for example (old house)

RUT240 router is handling the 4G bit, and that's on the WAN2 port of my UDM-Pro (originally on my USG), which handles the actual failover control

jamesoff,
@jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net avatar

@danieldurrans yeah mine has been solid; the DSL at the old place dropped once or twice (which resulted in setting this up, and then of course it was much more reliable ;). I WFH pretty much all the time so it's nice to have the backup just in case.

I've put on my out of office email.

I am still working this afternoon, but I always put my OoO on early, so that people who email just before I plan to stop working for a few days don't wonder what has happened.

This time, my OoO is in the style of an AI chatbot. Because, well, why not.

I always feel annoyed after installing a load of debian packages only to find the thing I was trying to do still doesn't work. It makes me feel like I am leaving a mess in my wake.

I am sure there is a way to tidy this up, but then I fear breaking something else.

jamesoff,
@jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net avatar

@danieldurrans @yarnofmoo reboot it now while you still remember how to fix it

The automatic screen brightness on my Macbook Pro M1 really doesn't cope well with the light coming in from behind me. It keeps going really bright then really dark.

jamesoff,
@jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net avatar

@danieldurrans yeah I’ve found that. I ended up turned off the auto while I was on a train as the changing light kept confusing it

What was the first distribution you installed / attempted to install?

For me - a Debian user - it was gentoo, around 2003, which was a mistake.

jamesoff,
@jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net avatar

@neil SuSE in about ‘97–98, so would have been 5.x or 6.0 I think. My dislike of rpm stems from that.

If my wife wants to do something "computer-y" - pretty much anything - she'll reach for her phone.

If I want to do something "computer-y", I reach for my computer, for pretty much anything other than reading a short message or quick, casual browsing.

Yes, everyone is different, but I much prefer a larger screen and a physical keyboard for anything but the most trivial of tasks.

Are you a computer-first person, or a phone-first person?

jamesoff,
@jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net avatar

@neil Consuming computer (reading fora etc): iPad or phone; doing computer: laptop
