@jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net

I write a bunch of code (mainly Python), have cats, tinker with and detail cars, and fiddle with FreeBSD. I like taking (making?) photos. Playing with Internet stuff since '96. Interested in kernels, protocols, and inner workings in general. Intermittent cyclist. Cloudy Amazonian, and they tell me my opinions are my own.

No no no!
I dislike GS-1 for all sorts of reasons, and they even have the odd typo in their standards, but they do at least have standards.
It is no surprise they could not scan this at my wine dealer.

Result :) best car in show, “looked like it just came out of the factory.” I’ll take that.

Good morning! The wind here has died down, and it is quiet outside.

What are your plans for the day?

jamesoff,
@jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net avatar

@neil brought a car I spent most of yesterday detailing to a show-and-shine competition. Also the cafe at the venue does excellent cooked breakfasts :)

Pretty sure it wasn't there yesterday.
Rogue plugin or something official?

    @neil Apple Mail, Outlook and GMail (my usual clients) make top-posting the easiest, and like you say most people expect it, so I usually end up doing it.

    My current campaign at work is to get people to trim the quoted block below their content a bit. I just select from the start of the signature of the mail I’m replying to the end and replace with “[snip]”, unless there’s useful context in there for just-added recipients.

    Just doing my bit for sustainability 🤏

    Made a quick Toggle Tailscale shortcut for iOS so I can do it right from my Home Screen. Wasn’t immediately obvious how to interrogate the connection status but it turned out to be straightforward enough

    jamesoff,
    @jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net avatar

    @danieldurrans Tailscale is only (available as) a service, although there's a third-party implementation of the control plane you can self-host. It's Wireguard underneath. It's pretty much a single click to set up and Just Works :)

    jamesoff,
    @jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net avatar

    @danieldurrans yeah it handles STUN and what have you automatically, and the MagicDNS stuff is great. I have my home dns setup (my own ad filtering) handling a view so Tailscale clients get Tailscale IPs in responses for my stuff at home, which makes it work when I’m on another network using the same range as home (which means the routing stuff can’t work)

    jamesoff,
    @jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net avatar

    @danieldurrans basically on everything - I do also have subnet routing/exit node enabled on a host (my Synology I think) just in case, but the DNS thing works for everything I need now. I did consider renumbering but couldn’t face it :)

    jamesoff,
    @jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net avatar

    @danieldurrans cool, apart from the connection reliability. I’ve not encountered that, is there a set of conditions which drive it?

    jamesoff,
    @jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net avatar

    @danieldurrans ah interesting, I tend to enable it on-demand(ish) when I go out (I have an iOS Automation which does it, although because Apple it can only prompt me to connect not actually do it). Definitely works for me with CarPlay though, I'm playing music from Plex at home with PlexAmp in the car. I've had it occasionally disconnect but never enough to dig in to or spot a pattern.

    I'm sure I remember a clock app for which was deliberately vague.

    It would declare the time as "Nearly tea-time" or "A little after elevenses" or "Quite late" or "Gosh, that's early".

    I can find no evidence that it existed and am beginning to wonder if I dreamt it.

    Anyone know what I'm wibbling about?

    Fun fact: if you fuck up the only entry in .ssh/config you get some very confusing behaviour

    $ cat .ssh/config
    Hostname gitlabssh.home
    IdentityFile ~/.ssh/gitlab.key

    What would you expect this to do?

    ssh myserver.example.com

    It'll open a SSH session to gitlabssh.home.

    That first line should be

    Host gitlabssh.home

    The directive HostName is valid, but overrides the destination connection name. With no "Host" before it, it applies globally.

    That was mildly confusing few minutes.

    jamesoff,
    @jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net avatar

    @ben @neil I did this on the command line once: “hostname something.blah” instead of “host”

    On our border mail gateway.

    That very much confused deliveries.
