jamesoff

@jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net

I write a bunch of code (mainly Python), have cats, tinker with and detail cars, and fiddle with FreeBSD. I like taking (making?) photos. Playing with Internet stuff since '96. Interested in kernels, protocols, and inner workings in general. Intermittent cyclist. Cloudy Amazonian, and they tell me my opinions are my own.

What do the four lights on a contactless card reader mean? They seem to be standard including virtual ones shown on on "all-screen" payment terminals. I assume they're indicating the stages of energising (for cards) and communicating with the chip.

Inspired by @neil, ordered a couple of old NUCs off eBay. Will probably relocate my install from a VM on my Synology to one (mostly so I can do things like Bluetooth and other radio protocols easier).

The others will be servers for homelab-type stuff; my current FreeBSD NUC has a bunch of stuff not in jails so I’ll redo those services properly.

@danieldurrans cheers, figuring out dongles/antennae was my next step :) what’s the M5stack unit for? Currently I just have some of the cheap BT temp/humidity sensors to connect, and maybe my Hue lights over Zigbee if they’re going to be ducks about logins etc but I’m sure my install base grow once I have the capabilities to support things…

jamesoff,
@jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net avatar

@danieldurrans oh that’s cool. I’m hoping I can place the NUC somewhere which gives it enough coverage. I have a bunch of ESP boards I made my own door/window sensors with which report in to HA over wifi (running Tasmota) :)

‘Apple’ Families with iPhones / iCloud:

If two people pay for more iCloud space and then group into ‘apple family’ with one person as the lead person (but the second person hasn’t stopped paying for their space cos it wasn’t obvious what happened to storage). Then want to move to ‘Apple One’ but with the 2nd person as the lead member, then is there any problems moving over? Would we lose any storage, albeit briefly?

jamesoff,
@jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net avatar

@hobbitswife we did that although with the same person running the family the whole time. My wife cancelled her storage plan after I added her, then later I upgraded to Apple One (a year or two - it didn’t exist when we did the first step).

jamesoff,
@jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net avatar

@hobbitswife it’s worked well for us! I also added both sets of parents to it and they were able to retire their own storage plans seamlessly

Post Incident Review

Issue: No biscuits arrived in the weekly shop.

Root cause: Dan forgot to add biscuits to the basket.

Impact: No biscuits available at 3.30pm when Dan wanted a biscuit.

@danieldurrans no Action Items?

jamesoff,

@danieldurrans also this should be blameless; “engineer did not add biscuits to the basket” :)

jamesoff,

@danieldurrans that's a mitigation which is good (mitigate before resolve), but you need an Action Item to make sure that they're not forgotten in future orders :P

I'm against cruel and unusual punishment normally but one more person who says 30C is fine from their air conditioned home that isn't designed to seal in heat and at 0% humidity is going to change my mind.

I've been in those countries when it's 50C. I would trade 30C Britain for it in a heartbeat.

We've been working on this for some time! Publish Textual apps and terminals on the webs. In effect turning them in to web applications. 😀

It's beta. I hope you can give it a whirl.

@danieldurrans yeah that’s a generic tv aerial pole off of Amazon or from B&Q (forget where I ended up getting it). Using the official mounts on it, but they seem to be a standard size screw so any third party one would do I expect

jamesoff,
@jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net avatar

@danieldurrans I need to move the rain gauge down slight; in high wind the wobble/bounce of the pole can be enough to trigger the see-saw thing in the gauge and make it misreport. Happens rarely enough that I’ve not gotten round to it yet though
