@jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net

I write a bunch of code (mainly Python), have cats, tinker with and detail cars, and fiddle with FreeBSD. I like taking (making?) photos. Playing with Internet stuff since '96. Interested in kernels, protocols, and inner workings in general. Intermittent cyclist. Cloudy Amazonian, and they tell me my opinions are my own.

In theory you should be able to follow this test user:

@你好

But I can't find any Fediverse software which actually supports non-ASCII usernames.

If you are able to see the user, its description, and its avatar - please send me a screenshot 🙂

Blood donation cancelled due to technical issues (needle/vein interaction), but was far enough through the steps that I can’t retry until after standard three month timeout :/

Not sure who set up this swap partition — I mean, I’m the admin of this instance but it was originally launched from a provided template, I think — but I don’t think I’ll bother using it.

@MonaApp any idea why Mona can’t sign in to snac? After going through the oauth form it GETs /api/v1/accounts/verify_credentials a bunch of times (looks successful in my logs) before the app says “The data couldn’t be read because it is missing”. Is it looking for something snac doesn’t include in the response? The response code is here if it helps: https://codeberg.org/grunfink/snac2/src/branch/master/mastoapi.c#L1112 Thanks!

@moopet @danieldurrans yeah, Burning Shores; a worthy add-on to the story. Just finished its main stuff today (it got sidelined by Diablo 4) so now just need to mop up side quests :)

Brother has arrived for Christmas so time for a new (to me) beer of his.

A beer (can) from Cloak + Dagger, called Holy Calamity. Session Pale, 4%, citrus pale.

Upgraded my mastodon server to 14. Fairly straightforward but ended up updating Ruby to 3.2.2 to fix a build error.

Added notes to my post at https://jamesoff.net/2022/12/05/mastodon-on-freebsd.html

Looking at swapping out pihole/Unbound for something else.

I am going to break something in a horrible way aren't I.

jamesoff,
@jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net avatar

@danieldurrans @richardwarriner I have exactly this with unbound, and some scripting for fetching blocklists into its config. Happy to chuck some notes together if it would help.

Types of conference workshop attendees:

  • Turns up with no device at all but expects to be able to do workshop somehow
  • Company laptop needs a mandatory restart for updates. Spends the whole session moving the always-on-top message out of the way
  • “Time to catch up on Slack”
  • Already used all these services at a 400 level, just wants to ask difficult questions
  • Brought own mechanical keyboard
  • Impervious to instructions; chooses own adventure (gets stuck)
  • WORLD’S LARGEST LAPTOP

My new-to-me NUCs arrived today; two seem ok but one seems unhappy about POSTing and blinks its power led three times in a loop before bringing up a message about failing to POST. The Visual BIOS works ok once you get in to it - except the SSD is missing in the device list, and if I convince it to boot from my USB stick it can launch the FreeBSD installer ok. Flashing the BIOS seems to succeed but doesn’t help and none of the assorted reset options have helped.

jamesoff,
@jamesoff@mastodon.jamesoff.net avatar

The RAM seems ok but swapped with one of the others just in case to no avail. Will try swapping the SSD next but ran out of time this evening. It worked ok in a USB enclosure for my MBP to write a HomeAssistant image to though.

What do the four lights on a contactless card reader mean? They seem to be standard including virtual ones shown on on "all-screen" payment terminals. I assume they're indicating the stages of energising (for cards) and communicating with the chip.
