I am listening to the most recent Haus of Decline podcast, because Way Back When (before it went batshit), I used to love the comic Sinfest

and

this shit is wild.

@Impossible_PhD I was also a Sinfest reader back in the day, and then it started going off the deep end. deep sigh

Never change Siri. 😑

jamie_blumberg,
@jamie_blumberg@hachyderm.io avatar

@MuseumShuffle My favorite (as in least favorite) recurrent Siri error lately is if I am in the car with CarPlay active I simply can't look up destinations via voice. I try to add a stop to a trip, use the voice prompt to say where I want to go and Siri shrugs. Stop the car and type it in (which you can actually do via the CarPlay screen 😅) and it works fine.

Now that I'm almost done with supporting landscape mode with @PleaseDontRain I'm realizing that I might be running out of excuses for not having an iPad version. 😳

@MuseumShuffle @PleaseDontRain As my Deep Dish talk demonstrates, once you’ve got an iPad version you might as well go ahead and do Vision Pro as well. 😉

For Moretex subscribers, Grey and I are watching and reviewing each of the Lord of the Rings movies.

This is my first time seeing these movies!

There are two special episodes available so far.

As well as these specials, you get ad-free longer episodes of Cortex.

I'll be taking next week off on SGW. Several reasons why, but generally busy. I'll be out of town for part of the weekend and....

I bought a new car on Monday. My very first new car. For those who haven't, buying a new car is a Whole Fucking Process.

So yeah. Taking the breather.

Dumb question, but if I bought one of those "MagSafe stickers" on Amazon, that are traditionally used to give an Android phone MagSafe-like-stickiness, could I instead use it in reverse, and stick it to a non-MagSafe accessory so it would stick to my iPhone?

For instance, say I want to stick it to a banana so the banana magnets to my phone

jamie_blumberg,
@jamie_blumberg@hachyderm.io avatar

@christianselig This took a dramatic turn right at the end, and now I feel like maybe @jamesthomson needs his own line of PCalc MagSafe Bananas.

Some time ago @rooster made a post along the lines of “there comes a time in every divorced person's life when they realize they forgot to buy a plunger". And while my divorce hasn't quite gone through yet I did just buy a plunger for my new house so she may have helped me dodge a bullet.

I would be amazing if I could “Mac Mirror” from an iPad Pro just like I can from Vision Pro, but it would run from my MacBook sitting closed in my backpack

It would be the perfect portable computer on planes, coffee shops, etc where I’m more than happy to give up the big screen

jamie_blumberg,
@jamie_blumberg@hachyderm.io avatar

@BenRiceM @charliemchapman The funny thing is that this is more or less mirroring via SideCar, with the only real difference is that it would be initiated from the iPad instead of the Mac.

And technically VNC/remote desktop apps can already do a so-so version of this. I frequently remote into my always on desktop from my iPad if I need to do something Mac-specific.

jamie_blumberg,
@jamie_blumberg@hachyderm.io avatar

@charliemchapman @BenRiceM So when I am mobile and I need to do day job work (aka Xcode) or record a podcast, I use a 15" Air. (Awesome laptop BTW.) But otherwise I generally use my iPad Pro (12.9” now, 13" as soon as UPS delivers it 😅) for just about everything else, including editing podcasts, reading books and comics, web browsing, etc.

At home I have a similar dynamic: my Mac Studio is the Xcode, recording and PC gaming machine while the iPad retains all of its use cases.

Welcome to another thrilling edition of “Shit My Cat Stole!” with two entries for you today.

First is the case for my Steam Deck OLED. Now granted she did not source this elsewhere in the house and then bring it to my room, but she did literally go to sleep in the case while I was playing Balatro, so I’m counting it.

Next is one of those sink stoppers you can use to fill the sink up with hot water during your morning routine, or pudding during a breakup or whatever.

Hades 2 hit early access yesterday.

I can see room for improvement. Particularly with how a couple of the weapons work, just in terms of how they move and interact with enemies.

But Hades 2 is already a better game than Hades was.

So in Swift, try! means “I’m confident the following will work; if it does not, crash”.

Similarly, in C#, someVar! means “I’m confident this isn’t going to be null; throw if I’m wrong”.

But in Dart, is! means “is not”.

The little inconsistencies between languages. 🫠

@chucker I'm sure this is exactly why Google just laid off a ton of Dart/Flutter folks.

I've had quite a fair lot of surgery. I am very, very tired of it, and I want no more transition surgeries. Period.

But I saw a trans gal recently who got lipo and a tummy tuck, and afterward, her hips and ass came the fuck in. No BBL, but kinda looked like she had.

And I've got a tummy pooch that's literally the only part of my body I'm not a fan of, and the idea I could light some money on fire and cast "transmute tummy to ass" is... more tempting that I'd like.

jamie_blumberg,
@jamie_blumberg@hachyderm.io avatar

@Impossible_PhD My gut/tummy combined with a lack of hips and ass are two of my biggest body complaints, so the idea of something like this is very intriguing.

For the gal you cited I wonder if maybe since her body saw her tummy area as damaged/wounded it automatically started putting fat stores elsewhere? I’m fascinated to know the science behind that.

jamie_blumberg,
@jamie_blumberg@hachyderm.io avatar

@Impossible_PhD I’ve been reading about the fat redistribution process for years and no one has ever explained it as clearly and succinctly as you just did. Thank you.
