I filed my taxes over the weekend, and I was amazed at the dark patterns TurboTax gets away with to try to convince you to give up your data. The wording and style is similar to other legitimate tasks you need to complete in the final review stage.

Once you click review and sign, you're presented with a disclosure of what you're signing.

@10xreloaded Nice, thanks! I'll have to check that out next year.

Just one more reason not to give your cellular provider your real information. I've had good luck with US Mobile over the past ~6 months with alias information. Good prices and network coverage. Works well on GrapheneOS.

@simon 100%. There also needs to be proportional penalties to the corporation size for the data they expose and how much of it. Which would hopefully disincentivize them from holding on to it longer than required.

@10xreloaded I kind of do something like that. I've been testing it out for the last ~6 months. My phone does have an eSIM, but I don't use the number associated with it, only the data. My numbers are all over VoIP now, and 99% of the time I'm on Wi-Fi in airplane mode. Once I'm back to making videos, that'll be one of the new ones I make.

@gertvk Couldn't agree more. It's been a solid app!

@gertvk I haven't run across that with Obtanium unable to update itself. As long as I select the correct build, I can update it through the app.

For the rate limit, that's GitHub doing that. Depending on how many apps you have in Obtanium, you may be more likely to hit the API rate limit. You can add a GitHub API key to Obtanium to increase the rate limit - https://github.com/ImranR98/Obtainium/issues/1164#issuecomment-1859237579. If you're using a VPN you can also switch locations to get a new IP that might not be currently rate limited.

I think this is my favorite thing I learned from HN in 2023.

@tahoma_photo That's great. Just looked it up now. It seems like it must be the time of the year as that happened on November 6th, 2003.

Makes for a good laugh when phishing email senders forget the closing curly bracket.

@GrapheneOS The only mobile OS I would trust to use here.

Pixel Tablet has shipped. I can't wait for the larger screen.

It's funny when someone sends me a serious email where they express their concerns about privacy and using a browser anonymously.

Then they include a remote tracker to see if I “read” it 🙃
