Well, I may have to get a new cell phone number. Thanks to the far right being in the billionaires pockets they’ve cut off the affordable connectivity program and I’m about to lose service. I can’t transfer my number without having an account number and a transfer pin, and I wouldn’t know where to get that if my life depended on it. I’m switching to visible. It cost a little bit more than I’ve been paying, but the service is much better.

kev,
@kev@dragonscave.space avatar

@ratking @evilcookies98 Visible works fine in Kansas City, MO.

kev,
@kev@dragonscave.space avatar

@evilcookies98 @ratking You can probably find a port-out pin on your carrier's website or by calling them.

So question, when I do get JAWS, would something like Leasey be of benefit to me? Honestly I thought about buying it just for the games at one point in my life, but that seems really silly now.

@gocu54 @evilcookies98 How does it still work with X?

Dell computers are complete pieces of garbage, and I'm never getting one again. About a year ago after my PC had to go to the shop, I connected an SD card reader, and it wouldn't turn on after that. I brought it to Best Buy the next day, and they were able to fix it by disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. A couple weeks ago, I attempted to connect my Trek so I could install maps before giving it to a friend of mine, and that same thing happened again. Just like the previous time this happened, Geek Squad was able to disconnect and reconnect the battery, and the computer turned on with no problems. The agent had suggested sending it in, but since I need a computer and it had been over a year since this happened before, I didn't think this was necessary. Today I attempted to connect a capture card that I've had since 2018, and the same thing happened. I'm bringing my computer to the store tonight, but since my Total Tech protection expired, I'm not sure if I want to know how much they're gonna charge me for such a simple procedure. It's bad enough I'm spending $35 one way to get there, but in an emergency situation like this where you need a computer, what are you supposed to do? I've been considering getting a new PC for a while, but I'm not sure what I should go with. The new X-Elite laptops seem like great machines, but I'm not sure if I want to continue using Windows full-time,. Even with all the crap I've been giving Apple recently, I never had something like this happen on my 2014 Mac, and I haven't heard any other Mac users mention this issue. I know people like @FluidEscence, @TheQuinbox, and a few others have said they virtualize, but when I decided to give the M1 Mac a try, I returned it after a couple days because of how frustrating I found VoiceOver. I don't want to get too excited, but a small part of me does hope that this ends up being Apple's year since they announced VoiceOver changes. I hope this means VO will get the attention it's needed for a while. My only thing with going the virtualized Windows route is having to map an NVDA key. I have my mechanical that has a numpad, so VO navigation may be better with that. I'd like to know what everyone thinks I should do. If I don't go for a Mac, I'm considering the Galaxy Book 4 Edge. I'd kind of like to go Windows, but I'm not sure what to do.

kev,
@kev@dragonscave.space avatar

@Rich @FluidEscence @TheQuinbox Don't connect cards to it then.

kev,
@kev@dragonscave.space avatar

@Rich @FluidEscence @TheQuinbox That's crazy! I've had mine turn off on me when connecting my Bluetooth keyboard to charge it, but I always just press the power button and it works. I do have a Lenovo as well that's made from metal and lasted over 10 years.

kev,
@kev@dragonscave.space avatar

@Rich @FluidEscence @TheQuinbox Even holding the power button for 30 seconds?

You never realize how much useless crap a computer manufacturer puts on your laptop until you use Revo to go through and uninstall a bunch of it. Lol… It’s a computer maintenance kind of morning before I do show prep.

kev,
@kev@dragonscave.space avatar

@wesderby At least Mac computers don't have all that extra stuff.

kev,
@kev@dragonscave.space avatar

@wesderby I'd do it if relatively easy. Those computers are like tanks. Rugged and dependable hardware.

kev,
@kev@dragonscave.space avatar

@evilcookies98 @wesderby The problem is how would you know what button you're on?

iOS 17 added an option to import an ESim QR code from photos when adding an ESim, so that if the carrier provides the photo, we can easily add it without having to scan it from another device and line up the camera. This was a huge accessibility aid. Unfortunately, that option was removed at some point. I can no longer find it on iOS 17.4 or 17.5. I don't know why Apple would have silently taken out such a useful option, but I'm going to be e-mailing Apple accessibility because this regression hits blind people particularly hard, and it could also cause problems for someone who has only one device. By forcing us to scan using the camera, Apple is also forcing us to have a second device available to display the QR code.

kev,
@kev@dragonscave.space avatar

@simon My carrier activates e-sim through its app.

tinygirl, to random

I'm hearing about this Sonos controversy, which further illustrates my argument against the need for a second device to operate something that should be accessible for the blind out of the box to begin with, being it's an audio device. But this is more the case these days where one needs a smart phone to operate appliances. Now, in their infinite unwisdom, Sonos has made their app inaccessible. I'm gathering that one can not use their Sonos device unless one has a smart phone? IDK.

kev,
@kev@dragonscave.space avatar

@tinygirl @cublanco @simon Both my mom's Sharp Roku TV upstairs and the Vizio downstairs have basic voice feedback if desired, you hold a button to turn it on or something. But the speech synths both suck and are hard to understand.

New audiobooks of all seven titles in JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series will be released exclusively on Audible in late 2025. More than 100 performers will be cast to voice the books’ various characters and “bring these iconic stories to life as never heard before”.
A joint statement from Amazon-owned Audible and Pottermore Publishing, the audio and ebook publisher of the Harry Potter series, said the new audiobooks will not aim to replace the much-loved single-voice English-language recordings by Jim Dale and Stephen Fry, but “sit alongside and complement” them.

Anyone know an easy way to show a full screen image in windows 95?
I thought I could use mspaint but it turns out it adds a 1px border in full-screen mode.

I could write a simple win32 app but that seems like a lot of work for something this simple

@evilcookies98 @carrottop1023 I still have an almost brand new BrailleSense U2. Only used a few times.

kev,
@kev@dragonscave.space avatar

@evilcookies98 @carrottop1023 They're durable, for sure, but basic software that's not supported anymore. Think of an Apex with no installable external apps. I have to set my wi-fi to an older security mode to connect the device it's so old. I think the Bluetooth Braille display is fine though. It's a good basic notetaker/display, but I'd trade it for a BT-Speak any day.

I don't know about you, but when a TV show or movie makes a joke out of some device accidentally connecting to a speaker, the lack of realism takes me right out of the moment. It's hard enough to connect to some of them on purpose.

WTF, Apple? Passwords can no longer be copied from Keychain. Formerly, could go in to Safari, Preferences, Passwords, right-click an entry, and select Copy. Now, the entire pop-up menu is gone. We can click the entry to get a dialog for resetting the password or sharing it. Can only share it directly to Safari on another device. No option to raw copy it anymore. Looked on iOS, and no raw copy there anymore, either.

kev,
@kev@dragonscave.space avatar
